Charles informed Harry of his shock diagnosis by phone before Buckingham Palace made its shock announcement at 6pm.
A source close to the Duke of Sussex said he would fly to the UK from his US home “in the coming days”.
Meghan (42) will stay in their villa in Montecito with children Archie (4) and two-year-old Lilibet.
His wife Meghan is unlikely to join him on the trip across the Atlantic.

Harry’s older brother, Prince William, has set a date when he will return to his first engagements.
Charles left the hospital last week after surgery for an enlarged prostate. But a “separate matter of concern” was noted during his stay.
Tests continued to detect cancer.
Last year His Majesty undertook an incredible 516 engagements, including 94 trips abroad.
It remains unclear when the king, 75, will be able to resume full-time work.
He will continue his weekly audiences with the Prime Minister, but may have to cut back on his doctor’s advice.
Meanwhile, other royals – including the Queen and the Prince of Wales – will continue with a full schedule of public duties.
King Charles confirmed his cancer diagnosis after surgery in January
He is also likely to take on additional duties on behalf of the king while he is not in action.
The Princess of Wales is unlikely to carry out any frontline duties until Easter in April, sources say.
She was admitted to the London clinic on January 16 and underwent surgery.
Harry flew in from California where he lives with his wife Meghan Markle and their two children Archie and Lilibet.
His sons William and Harry and siblings Prince Andrew, Princess Anne and Prince Edward have been told the king is stepping back from royal duties and starting treatment.
Today’s announcement comes just eight days after he was released from hospital following a “corrective procedure” to enlarge his prostate.
King, 75, began a regular treatment schedule today and postponed frontline duties on doctor’s advice.
A Buckingham Palace spokesman added: “Subsequent diagnostic tests identified a form of cancer.
“His Majesty began a schedule of regular treatments today, during which time doctors have advised him to postpone his public duties.
“During this period, His Majesty will continue to carry out government business and official paperwork as usual.

The news of the King’s cancer diagnosis was announced by Buckingham Palace last night and sent shockwaves across the country.
It coincides with the late Queen’s accession day, marking the moment she assumed the throne after the death of her father, King George VI.
And that after a series of health scares that hit the royal family since the New Year.
First, on January 16, Kate was admitted to the hospital for planned abdominal surgery.
The dramatic news was followed an hour later by the announcement that the king needed surgery for an “enlarged prostate”.
On January 26, Charles was admitted to the same hospital as Kate for surgery.
He stayed for three nights before leaving with Camilla, 76, wearing a smart coat, suit and tie – cheerfully waving to well-wishers.
Kate was secretly kicked out three hours early to find herself back in Windsor with her three children.
A palace spokesman said Kate was “progressing well” but was unlikely to return to public engagements before Easter.
She has not been seen in public since appearing on a Christmas walk to church in Sandringham more than a month ago.
Charles was supposed to stay in the hospital for two nights, but his stay was extended by 24 hours.
In another blow to the royal family, Fergie revealed she had received her second cancer diagnosis in six months.
The Duchess of York (64) last year had a mole removed, which has now turned out to be malignant melanoma – the most serious form of skin cancer.
The health shock comes after she was treated for breast cancer last year.
During reconstructive surgery, dermatologists removed several moles and raised the alarm.
Tests after Christmas revealed one was malignant.
Fergie will now have more tests to find out if the cancer has spread, but she hopes the mole was found early enough.
