Prince Stash Klossowski News
Many things defined Brian Jones. He was the Rolling Stones’ original leader and founding member. He was a skilled musician who could pick up an instrument that was unfamiliar to him and start playing it within hours. He served as the poster boy for the British youth, whose hormones were surging to the new music of rock and blues.
And after passing away on July 3, 1969, at the age of 27, he became legendary. However, Jones could also be terrifying, making fun of both allies and enemies and having a vicious sense of humour that cut to the soul of those with weaker constitutions. He was both adored and hated. But he always stood out.
Since the night when Brian Jones passed away at his Cotchford Farm residence in Sussex, England, his death has remained a mystery. Over the past fifty years, a lot of articles and books have been written about it in an effort to prove one hypothesis or another about why this singer passed away at the time that he did.
And now, in Rolling Stone: Life & Death Of Brian Jones, filmmaker Danny Garcia has added his two cents to the mix. A two-hour documentary that only played in a few theatres earlier this year is now available on DVD. It also includes supplementary behind-the-scenes material, deleted sequences, and a unique extended interview with journalist Scott Jones who discusses the police files that have been released in greater depth.
The first half of the movie develops a portrait of the actual Brian Jones by following his formative years from Cheltenham to his first years in London. The rest of the participants include friend Prince Stash, photographers Gered Mankowitz and Terry O’Neill, tour manager Sam Cutler, ex-girlfriend ZouZou, Pretty Things singer Phil May, who recently passed away in May, music writers, and several others who are somehow connected to Jones and the Stones, though no actual Rolling Stones talk in the movie. These voice-overs are provided by the late Ian “Stu” Stewart and are taken from older interviews.
As it tries to peel back Jones’ many layers as a person and as an artist, his deterioration as both, and his death as murder, it makes for an interesting watch because it places the spotlight squarely on Jones—not Jagger, not Richards. The decision to believe him or not is up to the viewer and Stones fan.
When Jones was arrested by the authorities for the first time in May 1967, Prince Stanislaus Klossowski De Rola, Baron De Watteville, was there. After meeting in Paris while Stash was playing in Vince Taylor’s band and they were sharing a bill with the Stones, they became buddies.
