- When she was in sixth grade, a teacher asked her if she wanted to be on the school gymnastics team. She agreed to join the team and participated in training at the hostel at the KD Singh Stadium in Lucknow. Once, at the stadium, she participated in the 800-meter race and won the championship. After winning the competition, she realized she had great endurance. She wanted to change the competition to a walking race, but was not allowed to do so. She left the dormitory and went home. She took a break from sports for three or four years, eventually returning to the stadium for track and field training. She competed in many track and field competitions but failed to win any prizes, when her coach suggested she try race walking. In 2011, she participated in her first race walking competition in Class 12 and won third place.
- Her parents and teachers are very supportive. Her teacher allowed her to miss class so she could attend practice sessions. In an interview, she spoke of her family’s support, saying:
I’ve never been stopped from doing anything. I grew up playing with boys, and even though I came from a rural area, my parents never stopped me from doing anything. My uncles and other relatives did try to restrict me, but it didn’t matter because my parents were there for me. I also did well academically, so parental support was never an issue. “
