Startup project in Mumbai
In May 2014, Puneet Gupta was approached by a Mumbai-based startup to work with them on a month-long project. He returned to Mumbai with INR 17,000 and spent INR 11,000 on a flight to Mumbai. In a TED talk, he revealed that in order to survive in Mumbai for 6,000 Indian rupees for a month, he ate cheap food with laborers and even slept on the floor, saying:
Finally, a startup asked me to complete a project in a month, and their budget was half my salary. I agreed and joined them because I thought I would get a regular job that month. The startup required me to fly over and be reimbursed after joining, but when I joined they said it would take 15 days to approve, so it would be credited to my salary after a month. When I left home I had 17k in my account and spent 11k on the plane. There is no way I can survive in Mumbai with 6k. So, I decided to eat cheap food and find a cheap place to live. All my friends had left Mumbai by then and I had no place to share a flat. But one of the guys asked me to stay at his friend’s house, and when I went there I found that there were too many people in the apartment and there was no extra bedding. I slept on the floor of that apartment for several days. For breakfast I drank coffee with half a cup of sugar so I wouldn’t feel hungry. For lunch I found a great place that used to be where workers ate, they served 5 puris with unlimited vegetables and salad for 15 rupees. For dinner, I have raw bread and milk. “

Facts/Trivia
- In his first job, a senior colleague had offered to help Punit with his astrological predictions. Puneet tried astrology, although he was never a believer in it. She predicted Puneet might resign, but she also expected his startup to shut down in April 2017 due to the departure of partners. She added that he should not worry as he will start something new in 2017-18 and will be a huge success. Punit eventually announced his resignation, even though he believed her prediction would not come true. He did have a successful startup, but as fate would have it, his partner left him in March 2017.
In 2015, before I quit my job to start an IT services company, a fellow astrologer forced me to make a prediction. I didn’t ask for it, and I teased her, but she told me what the next four years would be like. She had predicted that my firm would do well for two years but then start to decline when my partners left. As she said, the company is doing very well and our team size is 45 people. Additionally, my partner left me in March 2017, business declined, and then the company closed at the end of 2017. This is outrageous and this was a surprise to me as I always thought astrologers only had a pet line of dialogue, “You don’t get as much as you put in” and this is true for everyone. But that colleague predicted something true. That’s when I got the idea to start getting into astrology and recruit astrologers like her who could really help people. Today, we have been in business for 3 years and are valued at over $150 million. “
- In 2007, he secured All India Rank (AIR) 2968 in IIT-JEE examination and AIR 2191 in AIEEE examination.

- Punit Gupta promises Astrotalk users if India wins 2023 India vs Australia ODI World Cup final at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on 18 November 2023 Distribution of INR 10 Crores.
