Raaj Kumar was born Kulbhushan Pandit (aged 69; at time of death) on Friday, October 8, 1926, in Loralai, Balochistan, British India (now Balochistan, Pakistan) ). After the partition of India, he moved to Bombay and found a post as a Sub-Inspector in the Bombay Police and was posted to the Mahim Police Station. He had to leave the police force after he was allegedly involved in a murder. Thereafter, he turned to acting and started auditioning in the Hindi film industry.

Although he made his film debut in 1952 with the Hindi film Rangeeli, the 1950 Hindi film Neeli is considered to be his screen debut.
In 1949, he reportedly auditioned for the Hindi film Daulat, but was rejected. He was first noticed in Sohrab Modi’s film Nausherwan-E-Adil. In this period drama film, he plays Prince Noshazadeh. The role of “Shamu” in the Indian classic film “Mother India” (1957) established him as an actor in the Hindi film industry. In Mother India, he briefly played Nargis’ husband. “Mother India” later became India’s official entry for the Oscars.

Raaj Kumar received his first Filmfare nomination for Best Supporting Actor for the 1959 Hindi film Paigham, in which he played a factory worker. In “Pegham”, he debuted alongside Dilip Kumar, and the two reunited in Subhash Ghai’s film “Saudagar”.

- In 1969, his quarrel with Raj Kapoor at Prem Chopra’s wedding was widely reported in the media. Raj Kapoor reportedly made comments about Raj Kumar that instigated him –

Raj Kapoor said this in disgust after Raaj Kumar turned down his offer to play a role in Mr. Kapoor’s multi-starrer film “Mera Naam Joker.” Raj Kumar said in reply,
I may be a killer, but I’ve never asked you for help. You came to me! ”
- Raaj Kumar was on an evening drive with friend director Prakash Aurora and his wife to appreciate the success of Mother India. Kumar was standing at a Paan shop when he was confronted by a group of people. The anonymous men questioned, and a fight ensued in which one of the men was killed. Raj Kumar was arrested; however, he was later acquitted.
