Rachael Rollins Career

As an intern for Judge Fredrick Brown, Rachael Rollin got her start in the legal field. From 1997 through 1998, in the Massachusetts appeals court. Rachael served as the field attorney for the National Labour Relations Board from 1999 to 2002. From 2002 through 2006, she worked as an attorney at Bingham McCutchen LLP. She served as chief counsel for the Massachusetts Department of Transportation from 2011 to 2013. She worked at the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority from 2012 to 2013.

From 2013 to 2015, Rachael held the position of chief attorney for the Massachusetts Port Authority. During her district attorney election campaign, Rachael pledged to decriminalise low-level offences such as drug possession, shoplifting, malicious property damage, drug selling, operating a vehicle with a revoked or suspended licence, accusations of resisting arrest, etc. She defeated four other candidates on September 4, 2018, then on November 6, 2018, she defeated Michael P. Mahoney in the general election with 80% of the vote. On January 2nd, 2019, she started her job.

President Joe Biden chose Rollins to serve as the US attorney for the Massachusetts district in July 2021. At this time, she had to deal with some opposition, including US senator Tom Cotton’s declaration that he would work to block Rachael’s appointment to the position. According to Senator Ted Cruz, Rollins will not pursue some charges as she stated. Senators Cotton and Cruz voiced such vehement opposition that a committee vote to move Rachael’s candidature was postponed until September 2021. Cotton required some time to persuade his colleagues to vote against Rachael. The committee’s vote on September 30, 2021, resulted in an 11-11 tie. Vice President Kamala Harris voted on the senator’s move to invoke closure on December 8th, and it failed.
