Rachel McAdams takes the stage.
The Oscar-nominated actress, 44, will make her Broadway debut in the spring of 2024, leading Amy Herzog’s new play Mary Jane.
It will be produced by the Manhattan Theater Club and directed by Anne Kauffman (who helmed this year’s Tony nomination A sign in Sydney Brustein’s window), the show will begin previews on April 2 at the Samuel J. Friedman Theater in New York. The official opening will be announced.
According to the Manhattan Theater Club, the play is “the story of a single mother in an impossible family situation.”
“Faced with seemingly insurmountable odds, Mary Jane relies on tireless optimism and humor, along with the wisdom of the women around her who have become a makeshift family, to embrace each new day,” reads the synopsis.
Herzog, a 2023 Tony nominee for the Jessica Chastain-led revival of the film A doll househe is best known for being a finalist for the 2013 Pulitzer Prize for Drama 4000 miles. Mary Jane first appeared at New Haven, Connecticut’s Yale Repertory Theater in 2017, followed by an award-winning Off-Broadway production at New York Theater Workshop the same year starring Carrie Coon.
In a statement Monday, MTC Artistic Director Lynne Meadow said, “I am thrilled and very proud to bring this moving and heroic story of the human experience by one of our great American playwrights to the Broadway stage following its acclaimed Off-Broadway run in 2017 that was also directed by the great Anne Kauffman.”

The statement continued: “It is both a pleasure and an honor to give Rachel McAdams her Broadway debut after audiences have enjoyed her many acclaimed performances on film. As a huge fan of all three of these fantastic artists, I look forward to sharing Mary Jane with our audience.”
Among McAdams’ first successful roles was as a stage actress in the 2003 television comedy. Slingshots and arrows. The Ontario, Canada-born star has since starred in Hollywood hits like Mean Girls, Wedding Crashers, Doctor Strange, Game Night and Eurovision Song Contest: A Tale of Fire Saga. In 2016, she received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for Best Picture Reflector.

“She’s imperfect, but that makes her perfect,” said the actress, who has a son and daughter with partner Jamie Linden. “As a mom, it’s not too, too hard to find the mess, the privilege of watching a child grow up and being their parent. I think that’s a really happy place, a place to be.”
Broadway production Mary Jane will coincide with Ingrid Michaelson Notebook: Musical, an original work based on Nicholas Sparks’ 1996 romance novel announced by the singer-songwriter in 2019.
The 2004 film adaptation of the book starred McAdams and Ryan Gosling. Notebook will open March 14 at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theater.
