Rahul Bose is an Indian actor, screenwriter, director, rugby player and activist who works primarily in Bengali and Hindi films. He is the founder of The Foundation, an anti-discrimination NGO.

He graduated from Bombay Cathedral and John Connon School. He excelled in sports and acting from an early age. At the age of 6, he made his stage debut, playing the lead role in the school play Tom, the Piper’s Son.
After graduating from grade 12, Rahul applied to about 18 different American colleges but was rejected by all of them. He then enrolled in Sydenham College in Mumbai for further studies. During college, Rahul was a member of the school’s rugby team and participated in the West Indian Championships, winning a silver medal in boxing. Bose’s mother died when he was 20 years old. After his mother’s death, Rahul started working as a copywriter at “Rediffusion”, a radio and television signal distribution company.

Acting career
Rahul Bose started his career as a theatre artist in 1989 with the play Topsy Turvey. He then acted in several plays like Are There Tigers in Congo?, Art, Square Circle and Seascape with Sharks and Dancers. He started his acting career in 1994 with the Indian English film August English, in which he played the role of ‘Agastya Sen’. After that, he started working in television; he was roped in to play the role of ‘Sarkar/Pavan’ in the TV serial A Mouthful of Sky.
Bose subsequently acted in films like Bombay, Bombay Boy, Kick It Out, Mr and Mrs Iyer, Side Effects, Chain Kulii Ki Main Kulii and The Japanese Wife.
In 2001, he made his directorial debut with the film Everybody Says I’m Fine!. Apart from acting and directing, Rahul was also the voiceover singer for the song Akashe chhorano megher in the film Anuranan. In 2020, he played the role of Mahendra/Indranil in the Netflix original Bulbul.
Sports career
Rahul Bose started his sports career as a rugby player in 1998. He was a member of the first Indian national rugby team to participate in an international tournament, the Asian Rugby Confederation Championship.
In the Indian national team, he has played as both a midfielder and a right winger.
Social Action
In 2007, Bose founded an NGO named ‘The Foundation’. The NGO works towards eliminating discrimination in all walks of life. As a social activist, Bose has been involved in many national and global events like the ‘Narmada Bachao Andolan’, the ‘World Youth Peace Summit 2004’ and the ‘Copenhagen World Climate Change Summit 2009’. He is closely associated with many charitable organizations like ‘Teach for India’, ‘Akshara Centre’, ‘Breakthrough’, ‘Citizens for Justice and Peace’ and ‘Spastic Society of India’.
In 2007, Bose became the first Oxfam India Global Ambassador. He is also an ambassador for the American India Foundation, the World Youth Peace Movement, and Planet Alert. He has spoken on gender equality and human rights at Oxford University and during the World Youth Peace Summit (2004). On February 17, 2013, Bose gave a speech at the 8th graduation ceremony of BRAC University in Bangladesh.
In 2017, Rahul founded HEAL, a non-governmental organization against child sexual abuse.
dispute
In 2013, Rahul Bose was criticized for supporting the accused in the Delhi gang rape case. Bose said,
We have to ask ourselves, among the five or six rapists on December 16, who wants to change, who wants to reform… No one is talking about reducing the sentence, the sentence remains the same, but can we cultivate a gender warrior among them?”
The actor further stated,
If anyone is willing to reaffirm, are we capable of subverting our patriarchal mindset and telling them that we are ready to give you the right to reform even though public sentiment against you is so strong? … If we must … develop as a civilization beyond the borders of India, then we must seek forgiveness.”
His comments drew strong backlash from Twitter users. However, Bose tweeted again that he stands by his statement.
