While studying at the National School of Drama (NSD) in Delhi, Raj Babbar met Nadira Babbar, the daughter of Sajjad Zaheer, the famous Indian writer and founder of the Progressive Writers Association (Nadira Babbar). At that time, she worked as a director and screenwriter in many plays. They met while working on a play written by Nadira. Soon they became friends and fell in love with each other. Raj proposed to Nadira, who was four years older than him, and the two got married on November 21, 1975 (Friday). On Friday, July 20, 1979, the couple gave birth to a daughter, Juhi Babbar. On Sunday, May 24, 1981, the couple welcomed their second child, Arya Babbar.

By the time his second child was born, Raj was already a well-known actor in Bollywood. In 1982, while filming the Hindi film “Bheegi Raate”, he met Indian actress Smita Patil. In an interview, Raj spoke about his first meeting with the late Smita Patil and said,
I first met her in Rourkela, Odisha, when we went there to shoot Satish Misra’s film Bheegi Palken. Our first meeting ended in something of a conflict—a sweet conflict that set the stage for the rest of the relationship. I was impressed with her from the beginning. “
Soon, he became good friends with her and fell head over heels for her. When his wife Nadira confronts him and learns that he is in a relationship with Smita, Nadira and her children begin to separate. Later, Raj moved in with Smita and instead of divorcing his first wife, he married Smita Patil. On Friday, November 28, 1986, Raj and Smita welcomed their first child, Prateik Babbar. But their happiness did not last long, as 31-year-old Smita Patil died of complications during childbirth on Saturday, December 13, 1986.

Raj Babar was traumatized by her death but his first wife supported him and accepted him during this phase. Raj started living with his first wife and their children, and Prateik lived with his maternal grandmother. Earlier, Platek did not have a good relationship with his father, but after the death of Platek’s maternal grandmother, he became closer to his father and stepmother. Yes, our relationship has helped me in a way. Due to certain circumstances, we came together. At the time, Rekha had broken off a long-term relationship. She wanted to get rid of it. In 1977, he made his debut as an actor in the Hindi film “Kissa Kursi Ka”. He has acted in many Hindi films such as Sau Din Saas Ke (1982), Insaaf Ka Tarazu (1980), Kalyug (1981), Nikaah (1981), Sansar (1987) and The Bodyguard (2011).
In 1992, he starred in the Bengali film “Anutap”. He has appeared in several TV series such as “Bahadur Shah Zafar” (1986) as Akbar, “Mahabharat” (1988) as Bharata, “Maharaja Ranjit Singh” (2010) as the narrator, and “Pukaar – Call For The Hero” ” (2014) as Amarjit Shergill. Raj Babbar began his political career in 1989 by joining the Janata Dal, an Indian political party. Later he joined the Samajwadi Party and was elected to the Indian Parliament three times. From 1994 to 1999, he served as a member of the Federal Council. In the Lok Sabha elections (1996), he contested against Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party from Lucknow constituency. In 2004, he was re-elected in the 14th Lok Sabha election. In 2006, he was suspended from the Samajwadi Party over clashes with its then general secretary, the late Amar Singh. In 2008, he joined the Indian National Congress and in 2009 defeated Akhilesh Yadav’s wife Dimple Yadav. and was elected to his fourth term as a member of Congress.

He contested the 2014 Lok Sabha elections from Ghaziabad and lost to General VK Singh. In 2016, he was appointed president of the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee (UPCC), a post he resigned from in 2018. In 2019, he lost to the BJP’s Rajkumar Chahar by a huge margin.

- On July 7, 2022, he was convicted in the case of assaulting polling officials during the May 1996 elections. The Lucknow court imposed a fine of Rs 10 lakh while announcing a two-year jail sentence. 8,500 on him. - After marrying Nadira in 1975, he moved to Nadira’s parents’ apartment in Delhi due to lack of financial means. At that time, he sold his motorcycle for Rs. 6000 and gave the money to Nadira’s mother. Nadira said in an interview,
