Rambunctious Baby Rhino Gets a Case of the Zoomies at the Toronto Zoo: He’s a ‘Tank Puppy’

Many animals get zooms!

Pet parents are probably used to their cats and dogs burning up in bursts of energy running around the house, and zookeepers experience the zooms too.

One of Toronto Zoo’s newest residents with a need for speed is the park’s white rhino cub. The baby rhinoceros was born to the first mother Sabi in the Canadian zoo on December 28. Since then, the cub has charmed keepers with its playful personality, earning the animal the nickname “tank puppy”.

On February 20, the Toronto Zoo shared a video of the baby rhinoceros, which has yet to be named, running around its habitat on Facebook.

“Zoom, zoom, zoom, zoom,” the Canadian zoo captioned the shot.

In the video, the baby rhino trots quickly around its habitat, quickly zigzagging around space and other rhinos.

The baby rhino has yet to make its first public appearance, but should soon meet its growing fan base.

The Toronto Zoo is hosting a series of behind-the-scenes events where visitors can meet the “TZ Tank Pup” before he moves to his outdoor habitat this summer. Events start on March 1st and run until April 30th.

Those who can’t meet the rambunctious baby rhino in person can follow his latest achievements on the Toronto Zoo’s Facebook page.

In the wild, white rhinos are considered “near threatened” on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species. According to the Toronto Zoo, fewer than 16,000 white rhinos remain in the wild, and their numbers are declining due to habitat loss and poaching.

The zoo’s rhinos showed their love for running earlier this year with a video of Tumani from Iowa’s Blank Park Zoo.

In footage from the Des Moines Zoo, an eastern black rhino charges vigorously through piles of fresh snow.

“With the temperatures warming up, the rhinos were also able to get a little rich in snow! Tumani loves to make his way through piles of snow and test his abilities on all terrains,” the zoo captioned the adorable snap.
