News about Randa Weingarten
One of the most influential teachers’ union leaders in the country, Randi Weingarten, came under fire Thursday on CNN for advocating school quarantines.
Weingarten was chided by CNN’s senior political commentator Scott Jennings during a discussion about school closures and the response to COVID-19 in the United States. Jennings launched what would be a lengthy critique of Weingarten’s lockout rhetoric by saying, “He speaks for millions of American parents.”
He continued: “I had to homeschool them,” referring to his four children. My wife had to teach them at home. Speaking directly to Weingarten, Jennings stated: “I’m surprised by what you said this week about how you say you want to reopen schools.
After speaking out about his union’s involvement in influencing public policy on school closures during testimony before a select subcommittee on the coronavirus pandemic on Wednesday, Weingarten sparked outrage.
Weingarten and the teachers’ unions as a whole have been criticized by opponents for pushing to close schools during the pandemic. Weingarten said Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ handling of the pandemic restrictions would result in “millions” of deaths in 2021, but later backtracked on that comment. Notably, throughout 2020, Jennings persisted in criticizing Weingarten for his statements about school closures due to COVID.
He replied, “I think you’ll find that most parents think you’re the ringleader for school closures.” “You made a lot of statements that scared people to death about opening schools during the summer of 2020. And I hear absolutely no regret for the generational damage done to these kids.
Two of Jennings’ children require extra support in the classroom, so Weingarten’s policy has had a particularly negative impact on them, she said.
“I have two children who struggle with learning. Do you realize how difficult it is for children to learn at home rather than in an environment created especially for them? And I am amazed to hear you stand before Congress and the American people and admit , “Oh, I wanted to open them all the time. I’m afraid. I’m shocked,” Jennings repeated.
