Rusty Farooq was born in Lahore, Punjab, Pakistan. Soon after completing his studies, Rusty enrolled at Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) in Lahore. Rusty has been fascinated by acting since childhood and participated in various school plays and debates. In an interview, she spoke about this and said:
I remember from a very young age, I always wanted to be on stage. I used to participate in debates and skits at school. Most people get really nervous being on stage, but I love it. Then I just focused on studying because I thought acting was a career (laughs). But I loved the stage, so I was doing theater in Lahore as well, and I met Syed Sadiq. He was making a short film when we were in college and I did that. I met more directors and filmmakers like Tabish Habib and Kanwal Khoosat, and I made more short films and feature films until Joyland Appear.

Rasti Farooq made her film debut in a short film she made with Pakistani director Saim Sadiq while in college. She subsequently appeared in several short films such as “Letters from Mikael Mohammed” (2019), “Swipe” (2020), “City of Smiles” (2020) and “Wish I Had This Seat” ( 2021). Farooq’s short film Can I Have This Seat (2021) screened at numerous film festivals around the world. Saim Sadiq, best known for directing the critically acclaimed Pakistani film Joyland, spoke about Rasti Farooq in an interview and said:
I knew Rasti, we both went to LUMS, she was my primary school student, and we made a short film together because I wanted to apply to graduate school in Colombia. Then we kept in touch on and off. I loved working with her at the time and she made another short film with Tabish that I watched and I thought it was cute. Rusty was the first person I sent the script to, and she was the last one to be cast. I sent her the script when I had no money.

- Rusty Farooq’s debut Lollywood film “Happyland” has become the first Pakistani film to be screened at the Cannes Film Festival. The Lollywood film also received a standing ovation after being screened at the 75th Cannes Film Festival and won the Cannes Queer Palm Award for Best LGBT, “queer” or feminist-themed film. The film was shortlisted for the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) and will debut in the special screening section on September 8, 2022.

- Saim Sadiq’s critically acclaimed Pakistani film Joyland (2022) starring Rasti Farooq was initially banned in Pakistan on the grounds that The film contains “highly objectionable content.” Pakistan’s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting spoke about the film in an interview and said:
A written complaint was received alleging that the film contained extremely objectionable content, was inconsistent with social values and moral standards, and was in clear violation of the standards of “decency and morals” stipulated in Section 9 of the Film Ordinance, 1979,” the order stated “Therefore, now, the Federal Government, in exercise of its powers under Section 9(2)(a) of the Regulation and following a comprehensive investigation, has declared the feature film, Joyland, to be an uncertified film. Cinemas in Pakistan under CBFC jurisdiction with immediate effect. “
However, on November 16, 2022, the Pakistani government decided to lift the ban after receiving severe backlash for its decision to ban the film “Midland”. Salman Sufi, an aide to Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, informed the government’s decision to lift the ban on the film “Joyland” in a tweet. He tweeted,
Film #Joyland has been approved for release by the Censor Board [Prime Minister Sharif]. Freedom of speech is a fundamental right and should be upheld within the confines of the law. “
