Ravi Rana contested the 2009 Maharashtra Legislative Assembly elections as an independent candidate from Badnera Assembly constituency in Amravati district of Vidarbha region in Maharashtra . He won the election defeating NCP candidate Sulbha Khodke by 18,771 votes. In the election, the Congress Party and the National Congress Party formed a coalition government, with Congress MP Ashok Chavan as the chief minister.

Ravi Rana contested the 2019 Maharashtra Legislative Assembly elections as an independent candidate from Badnera Assembly constituency. He won the election by defeating Shiv Sena candidate Priti Band by a margin of 15,541 votes. He subsequently gave unconditional support to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to form the government in the state after the elections. However, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and the Bharatiya Janata Party’s National Democratic Alliance (NDA) failed to form the government, after which the Shiv Sena, NCP and Congress formed a coalition under the name Maha Vikas Aghadi The Maharashtra government was formed under a new alliance with the MVA (MVA), with Uddhav Thackeray as the Prime Minister.

Arrested during farmers’ unrest (2011)
In 2011, Rana was arrested and jailed in Amravati Central Jail for participating in farmers’ agitation demanding better prices for raw cotton. Rana, along with his wife and Yuva Swabhimani Sanghatana, staged a protest against the government-backed increase in the minimum guaranteed price of raw cotton from Rs 3,300 to Rs 6,000 per quintal. While in prison, he went on an indefinite hunger strike for his cause, causing his health to deteriorate. CM Prithviraj Chavan’s envoy and Maharashtra Industries Minister Narayan Rane spoke to Rana over phone and convinced him to end the fast, but Rana refused to budge.

House arrest under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (2022)
On January 12, 2022, Rana was booked under Section 144 of the CrPC for installing a statue of Shivaji Maharaj’s mother on the occasion of his mother’s birthday at the Amravati Rajpath flyover. Under house arrest. Police Commissioner Ati Singh claimed that Rana and his followers illegally encroached on the flyover to install the statue. Following the incident, Yuva Swabhiman Party activists burned an effigy of Amravati Municipal Commissioner Praveen Ashtikar in front of Rana’s house to protest against the removal of the statue.
Charged with Attempted Murder (2022)
Ravi Rana has been charged with attempted murder for the 2022 attack on the Amravati Municipal Commissioner. Some women workers of Rana’s Yuva Swabhiman Party threw ink on Amravati Municipal Commissioner Dr Pravin Ashtikar. Activists are apparently angry over the removal of the statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj installed on the Amravati Rajpath flyover. It was alleged that the statue was installed without official permission from the municipal corporation; hence, it was removed. Rana claimed that he was not present when the incident occurred; therefore, he could not be held responsible.
Arrested at Hanuman Chalisa Street (2022)
On April 23, 2022, Rana and his wife Navneet Kaur Rana shouted haha in front of Matosshree, the residence of Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray Hanuman Chalisa, was arrested by Mumbai police and sentenced to 14 days of judicial custody on the order of the local magistrate. The couple had earlier announced that they would recite Hanuman Chalisa in public if mosques continued to use loudspeakers to preach azan and other announcements. Thereafter, the couple was charged under IPC Sections 153 (A) (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language etc. and committing conduct prejudicial to the maintenance of harmony) and 135 Article was filed and registered. Bombay Police Act (Breach of Police Prohibition). Later, the police also added IPC Section 124-A (sedition) in the case against them. The city civil court granted bail to the couple on May 4, 2022, and the bail was set at Rs 100. $50,000 each and instructed not to speak to the media about the case.
