Rebecca Makkai, C Pam Zhang Among 2024 Carol Shields Prize for Fiction Nominees — See the Longlist! (Exclusive)

The Carol Shields Prize for Fiction has announced its longlist for 2024. Authors such as Rebecca Makkai and C Pam Zhang are among the nominees for the prestigious prize, the largest literary award in the English language for non-binary and female authors of novels, short story collections and graphic novels, according to a statement shared with PEOPLE. This year’s nominees were chosen by jury president Jen Sookfong Lee, Laila Lalami, Claire Messud, Dolen Perkins-Valdez and Eden Robinson. “The jury for this year’s Carol Shields Award is very pleased to share this exceptional and diverse longlist,” Lee says in a statement shared with PEOPLE. “All authors have written extraordinary works of fiction that illuminate who we are—our histories, flaws, ambitions, and loves—and who we might be. Congratulations to all the shortlisted writers and their publishers.”

Established in 2020, the award is named after Carol Shields, author of over 20 books, including the 1993 Stone diaries, which won the Pulitzer Prize in 1995, the Governor General’s Award in 1993, and was shortlisted for the Booker Prize. Prize winners will receive $150,000 and a stay at the Fogo Island Inn. Four finalists will receive $12,500 each.
