Ree Drummond Drove 16 Hours to See Her Youngest Son Play Football Because She’s ‘Empty Nest Sad’

Ree Drummond would do anything for her children – including a 16-hour road trip.

On Thursday, A pioneer star, 54, shared that she visited her youngest son, Todd, 19, at the University of South Dakota to see him at a football game.

“In this photo from last Saturday, I’m showing the classic goofy, dreamy, I-can-see-my-child-for-two-hours sad-but-happy-mom empty-nest smile,” Ree captioned the Instagram post with the addition “(Love and Todd.❤️)”

In the photo, Ree is dressed in the university’s red and white colors as she hugs her smiling son, who is decked out in head-to-toe football gear.

“Let me know if you get it,” she asks her followers in the caption, referring to the mixed emotions in her smile. Followers filled the comments with their own empty nest experiences.

“I totally get it!! Now I’m going through it myself and it’s AWFUL!!” writes one follower. Another says: “My boys did [in] Life in NC and Florida without them is the worst ever…. They are mine ❤️”

Ree responds to these commenters and others by commiserating, writing, “Hugs” or sharing a heart emoji.

“I drive 45 minutes from my house to attend a school event for one of my grandchildren (sometimes less than [an] hour) and then drive 45 minutes home! This picture is exactly that – this is what love looks like!” comments another follower.

In Ree’s reply, she reveals that “we drove 8 hours each way.”

“That’s what we parents (and grandparents) do!” she added.
