Reese Witherspoon Reveals the Holiday Tradition She Tried That Was ‘an Epic Disaster’ (Exclusive)

Reese Witherspoon always planned to write a children’s book for the holidays.

The Morning show star, 48, whose third book in her children’s series, Busy Betty and the perfect Christmas presentis out now, “I wanted to do a Christmas one because my little son even said to me last night, ‘I don’t know what to get everyone,'” says the actress, who is mom to her three children, Ava, 25, Deacon, 21, and Tennessee, 12. ” I said, ‘Understand anything you make me, I will love more than anything you buy.’ We hope that the book will in some way confirm that homemade gifts are the best.”

As for her childhood holiday memories, Witherspoon was devoted to making gifts for loved ones. “I would make watercolors, felt-tip cards, Rice Krispies treats, or chocolate chip cookies,” she says. “I still do to this day.”

Her most desired toy under the pine tree? “I was obsessed with Teddy Ruxpin,” she recalls. “My dad found the last one in a thrift store, and I played with it every day. It was basically a big glorified cassette player, so I put all my music into it. I just loved it.”

When it comes to holiday customs with children, the actress, producer and entrepreneur enjoys joint activities such as ice skating, decorating and making gingerbread houses. “We like to decorate the porch with poinsettias and ribbons and garland and take family photos for Thanksgiving so we can hopefully get together and get a Christmas card,” she allows.

These days, her two grown children get a pass. “It’s harder when the kids are in college, they don’t want to be on the Christmas card so I told them when they turn 20 they don’t have to,” she says. “It’s sad, but I still have one little 12-year-old, so he dresses up and is cute.”

The family puts their all into making their gingerbread houses – with one exception. “We use a kit,” explains Witherspoon. “When I was a ‘Do whatever Martha Stewart says’ woman, I tried to build my own house and it was an epic disaster. My engineering wasn’t up to par. It just fell apart.”

Her most memorable gifts from her children come from the heart. “When one of my children was little, they gave me a jar full of very specific memories and compliments,” she says. “It’s everything from ‘I love it when you hug me after school’ to ‘I love it when we sing this song in the car.’ To this day it makes me cry.”

The second was “five letters that they wrote for me to open at different times, and I slowly opened them over the course of a year and it was such a beautiful, beautiful gift,” adds Witherspoon. – We are a very sentimental family.
