She became popular as the Congress candidate from Khannapur ST constituency even before officially joining the party. The move comes after her former party, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BRS), did not nominate her for re-election in the assembly elections.

She served as Member of Parliament for the Paris constituency of Zira. In 2009, she ran for parliament as an independent candidate but lost. In 2014, he joined Telangana Rashtra Samithi (now BRS). In the same year, he contested the Assembly elections and won from the Khannapur constituency. From 2016 to 2018, she served as the chairperson of the Women, Children, Disabled and Elderly Welfare Committee of the Telangana State Legislature. In 2018, she contested the 2018 Assembly elections on a TRS ticket and won the election from Khannapur constituency. In 2023, she was denied a ticket by the BRS due to corruption allegations. In 2021, Rekha and her husband faced a problem as she was unable to hoist the national flag due to her busy schedule. During a nation-building event, her husband hoisted the flag at the camp office. Opposition leaders have called for legal action because they believe her husband, who works for the government, has violated rules.
Argument with village sarpanch
In 2023, at a community meeting in Khanapur, Rekha got into an argument with a village elder. The purpose of the meeting was to select the beneficiaries of the two-bedroom houses. District Collector Varun Reddy, MLA Rekha Naik, village elders and many officials were present. During the speech, Rekha listed the names of everyone on stage, including the village chief. However, he asked her not to mention his name. This upsets Rekha and she gets angry saying that people like him hinder the progress of the village. The village chief then responded, asking if she was threatening him and what she planned to do.

- In 2017, she arranged an event at her home where she gathered with many women and girls to recite verses from the Quran. In an interview, she expressed her belief that the Quran is a source of guidance for everyone in the world. She expressed her love for reciting the Quran and was happy to see a Muslim girl reciting the Quran. She mentioned that she has felt a close connection with the Quran since her school days and often participated in recitation activities with her friends. She added that listening to the Quran brought her inner peace.

- On August 22, 2023, she and her husband submitted their application to join the Congress party at the Congress headquarters in Gandhiji House, Hyderabad. Her husband became a member on August 21st. After receiving her application, the leaders of the National University asked her to come to the city to formally join the party. However, she did not confirm her decision. Rekha mentioned that she was removed from the list of candidates but gave no explanation.
