Remo Fernandes is a famous Indian musician and playback singer, considered one of the pioneers of Indian pop music. He is popular for singing various pop, rock and Indian fusion songs including Jalwa, Humma Humma and O Meri Munni. In 2007, he was awarded the Padma Shri.

Remo Fernandes started writing love songs at the age of 14. Remo said of his first band in an interview:
When I was in high school in Goa, I formed this band called The Beat 4. I play lead guitar and sing. I also wrote our original compositions, the first one was when I was 14 years old. We won first prizes in most competitions in Goa: Best Group, Best Lead Guitarist and Best Drummer. It was the farewell gig for The Beat 4, which I was breaking up because I was going to Mumbai to study architecture. I think that was in 1970. I was 17 years old. Or it could have been 1969, in which case I would have been 16 years old. “

After a long backpacking trip in Europe, after college, he returned to Goa and was exposed to hippie culture. Later, he met a European band called the Amsterdam Balloon Company. Remo also started playing in concerts at Baga Beach in Goa. In 1981, he performed in Amsterdam with the orchestra’s violinist Lucas Armor and released a record called Venus and the Moon.
Along with bass guitarist Abel, tabla player Lala and percussionist Bondo, he formed his own fusion music band and named it Indiana. Remo was a member of many bands, including “The Microwave Papadums”. On September 19, 2000, three members of The Microwave Papadums, Dharamedra Hirve, Selwyn Pereira and Victor Alvares, and Remo’s personal assistant Sunil Redkar, died in a road accident in Kanpur after a concert.
In 2002, Remo released two albums “Symphonic Chants” and “India Beyond”. However, these albums went unnoticed in India. His albums “Pack That Smack” and “Bombay City” (both aired on CBS) each sold over 20,000 cassettes. On Remo’s 50th birthday, he performed a reunion concert in Goa with his former bands The Beat 4, Indiana and The Savages, among others. The concert lasted four hours and was attended by 25,000 people. As a member of the band, Remo has performed in many locations including Brazil, Bahrain, New York, Nairobi, Seychelles, Santa Cruz, Mauritius and Margao.

In 1984, Remo recorded his first album, “Goan Crazy”, followed by another in 1985, “Old Goan Gold”. He released the track on a four-track cassette TEAC Portastudio recorder owned by “Goana Records”. On most of Remo’s albums, he played all the instruments, sang all the notes, composed the music, and wrote the lyrics. From the recording engineering to the album cover design, he did it all himself. While his tapes were being made in Mumbai, he went from shop to shop, distributing his tapes in Goa along with postcards, illustrations for a book of poetry titled “Leads” and T-shirts he designed.
Inspired by Mother Teresa, Remo created a double album titled Teresa and the Slum Bum (2019), which features artists from India, Europe, the United States and 35 British singers

Remo was first recognized as a singer when he sang in front of Rajiv Gandhi at an event. He sang a song called “Hello Rajiv Gandhi” which gained him huge popularity. Remo performed at a fund-raising event for the victims of the Bhopal gas tragedy, which was telecast on Doordarshan TV. Remo Fernandes has lent his voice to several Hindi songs, including “Dekho Dekho Yeh Hai Jalwa” in the film Jalwa (1986), “Ek Ho Gaye Hum Aur” in the film Bombay (1994) Tum” as well as “Aflatoon – Aflatoon” in the movie Aflatoon (1997). In 1998, Remo released another music album titled “O Meri Munni” which became a huge success.

In 2021, Remo Fernandes wrote an autobiography titled “Remo: The Autobiography of Remo Fernandes”, which tells about his upbringing in Goa, Portugal, his early A passion for music, architectural studies in Mumbai, adventures hitchhiking to Europe and North Africa with an ex. In 2015, Remo Fernandes and his son were summoned by the North Goa police after a girl claimed their car hit her and accused Remo of abusing her. The police registered a first information report against Remo under Section 8 of the Goa Children Act, 2003 after recording his statement; however, Remo denied the charges and said he was in Europe at the time of the accident.

- Remo plays guitar, bamboo flute and synthesizer and sings in English, Hindi, French, Portuguese and Konkani.
- As a young man, he recorded albums at home, wrote and illustrated a book of poetry, and designed postcards and T-shirts. He would drive around on a yellow scooter, handing out tapes of his albums, postcards and T-shirts.
