Revenge Dress Redux! Princess Diana's Twin Nieces Amelia and Eliza Spencer Channel the Late Icon's Most Famous Look

Princess Diana’s nieces, Lady Amelia Spencer and Lady Eliza Spencer, made a statement at the British Fashion Awards on Dec. 2 — and if their chic black dresses looked familiar, there’s a reason.

Both twins, 32, wore off-the-shoulder floor-length black dresses, deftly channeling their late aunt’s iconic revenge dress she wore in June 1994.

Amelia’s black column dress featured a plunging v-neckline and a bit of sparkle on thin straps, while Elizina’s had more sleeves with a sculptural bodice detail. Each wore a diamond necklace, earrings, bracelets and rings. No matter how you look at it, both Spencers took a page from Princess Diana’s style book.

Princess Diana wore the famous “revenge dress” in 1994 when she appeared at a gala performance at the Serpentine Gallery in London. Her dress was body-hugging off the shoulder with an asymmetrical hemline and a chiffon train. She also wore it with a daring necklace. The dress earned its title because Princess Diana wore it the same night Prince Charles admitted on national television that he had been unfaithful to her.

As reported The New York Timesin an ITV documentary broadcast a year and a half after the couple’s split, Queen Elizabeth’s eldest son and heir said he remained faithful to Diana “until it broke irretrievably”, confirming rumors of his affair with current wife Camilla Parker-Bowles. “It’s deeply unfortunate that it happens, but it happens, and unfortunately, in this case, it happened,” Charles said.

The twins, daughters of Diana’s brother Charles Spencer, 9th Earl Spencer, grew up in South Africa and told Tatler 2021 about their special connection with Aunt Diana when they were children.

Princess Diana was “incredibly warm, motherly and loving,” Eliza said, adding: “She always tried to connect with us as children and had a talent for reading children’s hearts.”

“We always knew her just as our aunt,” said Eliza. “Growing up in South Africa, I had no idea how significant it was in the world until I was much older.”

“As a child, I realized the enormity of the loss for my father and family,” she added. “It wasn’t until later that I realized the importance of losing her as a figure in the world.”
