The online success of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and his presidential campaign is challenging some internet companies to handle the changing landscape of misinformation on social media.
Kennedy, a longtime anti-vaccine activist, has been warmly received by some of the most prominent figures in the alternative media. He has appeared on numerous podcasts in just over two months, including Joe Rogan, the “All-In Podcast” hosted by powerful tech investors, the Jordan B. Peterson Podcast, and others.
Videos of these appearances have been viewed by millions of people, which are generally quite consistent and feature Kennedy espousing a wide range of conspiracy theories and absurd claims, most of which are either supported by scant evidence or discredited entirely, interspersed with other observations, stories and opinions
While some of the movies are no longer available live, others have been taken down by YouTube. Kennedy is spreading false information about vaccines and the covid-19 pandemic in nine YouTube videos that were uploaded this year and are still available, according to an NBC News investigation. NBC News discovered 14 audio episodes on Spotify in which Kennedy spread medical misinformation.
Kennedy publishes his own podcast on the platform. Kennedy was also free to post and broadcast without worrying about moderation on websites like Twitter and Rumble, both of which spawned cabal groups.
The remarks contributed to the impression that Kennedy’s candidacy was gaining momentum. He has occasionally tried to downplay his previous opposition to vaccines, though he still frequently expresses his opinion in the media.
Kennedy’s appearances also coincide with the repeal of various pandemic-era regulations against Covid misinformation in many media outlets.
Twitter stopped enforcing its policy against Covid-19 misinformation shortly after Elon Musk took control of the social media platform late last year. In addition, Meta said last week that he would end his policy of disinformation about Covid-19 globally, but would continue it in countries where the condition is considered a public health emergency.
In accordance with its policy against vaccine misinformation, YouTube removes any material that contains “harmful misinformation about currently approved and administered vaccines.” To prevent content from contradicting the recommendations of regional health authorities or the World Health Organization regarding Covid-19, YouTube has specific rules on disinformation about Covid-19.
