Rich Homie Quan's Family Pays Tribute to 'Beloved' Late Rapper: His 'Triumphant Spirit Lives On' (Exclusive)

Rich Homie Quan’s family is speaking out for the first time since the rapper’s tragic death.

The hip-hop star (née Dequantes Devontay Lamar) died in Atlanta on September 5 at the age of 34. The investigation into the cause of death remains unsolved.

In a statement shared exclusively with PEOPLE, Lamar’s family addressed the heartbreak of losing him while vowing to make sure his legacy lives on.

“On Thursday, September 5, 2024, the Lamar family lost our beloved son, brother, father and friend. Known to the world as Rich Homie Quan, Dequantes Devontay Lamar was a proud native of the great city of Atlanta, Georgia and represented it for A as he and his music traveled the world,” the statement read.

It continued: “Although he leaves us with an undeniable hole in our hearts, we are comforted to know that his music and winning spirit live on. Quan’s legacy will forever be cemented as the soundtrack to our lives. And for that we are grateful. A celebration of life details will be shared soon. Thank you all for your kind words and support in this difficult time.”

Lamar — who was known for hits like “Type of Way” and “Flex (Ooh, Ooh, Ooh)” — was the proud father of five; sons Devin, Royal, Khosen and Layor, as well as daughter Alayna.

The Fulton County Medical Examiner confirmed, saying in a statement that Grady Memorial Hospital notified them of the death of Dequantes Devontay Lamar. The autopsy was completed on Friday.

The cause of Lamar’s death is currently unknown, and the medical examiner said the “cause and manner of death are pending completion of laboratory studies and microscopic examination of tissue slides.”

Shortly after news of Lamar’s death broke, the rapper received tributes from multiple fellow artists online. Boosie, 41, wrote “I JUST TALKED TO YOU BRA #tipQUAN Never go forget your smile the way the talk n of course the music.”

The artist, born on October 4, 1989, officially began releasing music in 2012 before earning his first major hits the following year with “Type of Way,” as well as YG’s “My N— -” with Jeezy. “Type of Way” was the second single from his third mixtape Still entering: reloaded. The song was a number 50 hit on Billboard Hot 100, and was certified gold.

He also had memorable roles in fellow rappers’ hit songs like “Lifestyles” with Young Thug and “Save Dat Money” with Lil Dicky and Fetty Wap.

His debut album, Rich as in Spiritwas released in March 2018 and peaked at number 32 on The Billboard 200 chart.
