Facts/Trivia

  • He choreographed stunts for the American film Resident Evil: Apocalypse (2004) and the TV series Fallen (2007).
  • He also taught Jeet Kune Do and Arnis under his mentor Inosanto.
  • Initially, he was going to get instruction from Dan Inosanto’s academy and then return to his hometown to open a school. However, after working on a few films, he became interested in performing arts. He talked about this in an interview, saying:

However, doing stunt work in movies always fascinated me, and after learning that two of my training partners had the same interest, we started practicing stunt fights on the weekends. Since I’m a martial artist, I’ve always been interested in fight choreography. I just tend to choose acting jobs over fight choreography jobs because I enjoy acting more.”

  • In 2018, he won the Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Stunt Performance for “Wonder Woman”, sharing the award with other stunt performers in the film.
  • He wanted to play Batman since he was a kid. In an interview, he talked about this and said,

I’ve always wanted to play Batman ever since I started doing stunts. I’ve been watching Batman and collecting comics since I was 5 years old, and he’s been my favorite superhero ever since. Before we started shooting the film, Zack Snyder wanted me to take some promo photos in front of the Batmobile. It was in the middle of winter in Detroit, and it was freezing cold. It was the first time I’d ever put on a full suit, and I was so excited. I kept staring at my shadow on the ground, excited. Zack asked me several times if I was okay with the cold weather, but honestly, I never noticed. (Laughs) Needless to say, BvS has been my favorite job in 25 years of stunts.”

  • He considers his father (a basketball player at the University of Cincinnati) and grandfather (a boxer) as his role models. Speaking about this in an interview, he said,

Growing up, my dad would tell me about my grandfather’s boxing. He used to travel up and down the East Coast doing speed bag demonstrations. My dad and grandfather had incredible hand speed. So, for whatever reason, ever since I was a kid, I was obsessed with being as fast as they were. Luckily, that fast-twitch gene got passed down to me. It’s served me well in my career, like when you have to perform in a thick latex suit and you still have to be the fastest guy in the room.”
