His family today told of their heartbreak.

The statement read: “Richard sadly died in his sleep after a long battle with illness.

“We are deeply saddened by his loss, we will fondly remember him for his generosity, creative spirit and fantastic storytelling.

“He is well remembered outside the family for his long career on television and theater where he delighted audiences of all ages.

“This brought him great joy and we know his legacy will live on.”

Liam Rudden, who was given his first professional acting job by the theater and film star, also paid tribute.

He wrote on his official X account: “It is with great sadness that the family of Richard Franklin asked me to share the news of his death early this morning.

“Richard died peacefully in his sleep.

“Funeral details will be posted here as they become available.

“Sleep well, Richard.”

Doctor Who fans will know Franklin from his screen time as Captain Mike Yates of UNIT – in the series from 1971 to 1974.

He then went on to take on various roles, both on television and in Doctor Who spin-off media.

He was mostly an actor as a theater actor.

Franklin also appeared as a recurring character on several high-profile British television programmes, including Crossroads and Emmerdale, which at the time was called Emmerdale Farm.

He was also an author, published the book Forest Wisdom: Radical Reform of Democracy and the Welfare State and wrote novels based on the Whoniverse.

He ran for the UK Parliament for various parties and launched the Silent Majority Party.
