Richard Lewis joked about death in his latest appearance on Curb your enthusiasm broadcast before his death at age 76 on Tuesday.
In the episode of February 18 Curb your enthusiasm, he and actor Larry David, who play fictionalized versions of themselves, discussed Lewis’ will while on the golf course. The topic came up after David told Lewis that his streak had improved after hearing a lesson from another player.
“Can I tell you something? I think this is the happiest I’ve ever been in my life,” David said, to which Lewis replied, “I don’t even know who I’m looking at right now.”

After David asked how it was possible that “something good was happening to me”, Lewis said he had “better news”.
“I have better news for you. I’m leaving you in my will. I’m tweaking it, and you’re in it.” David told him not to do that and insisted that he give the money to someone who needed it.
“When I die, I want you to know how much I care about you,” Lewis explained, adding, “You’re my best friend. You understand.”
David kept saying he didn’t want the money, to which Lewis said he’d give it to him anyway, prompting David to say, “Oh my God. Screw you.”

Lewis’ will was brought up again later in the episode when the two went golfing once more, and he said he would be seeing an estate attorney later that week.
“You know, it’s kind of dawning on me what’s going on. You’re putting me in your will because you want me to put you in mine,” David said, to which Lewis asked, “Are you out of your fucking mind?” and thinks he would be that “shallow and that manipulative”.
After Lewis called it “a low point in their friendship”, David said he would leave Lewis in his will, and the two discussed how they would agree on what they would get each other.

“By the way, what makes you think I’ll die before you?” David later asked Lewis, to which he replied: “You’re a bit ragged now. I’m in a bit better shape than you.”
“You think so? Oh really. I’ll outlive you by 20 years,” Lewis said.
A representative for Lewis confirmed his death in a statement to PEOPLE on Wednesday.
“Actor/comedian Richard Lewis passed away last night at his home in Los Angeles following a heart attack. His wife Joyce Lapinsky thanks everyone for their love, friendship and support and asks for privacy at this time,” the statement read. read.
In a statement to PEOPLE, David remembered Lewis as “the funniest person, and also the sweetest.”

“Richard and I were born three days apart in the same hospital and he was like a brother to me for most of my life. He had that rare combination of being the funniest person and the sweetest at the same time. But today he made me cry and I will never forgive him for that,” he said in his statement.
