Rick & Morty: 9 Memes That Perfectly Sum Up Morty

Rick and Morty season 6 is in full swing, with new, completely wild episodes airing each week since September and picking back up post-hiatus in November. As Adult Swim continues to pour out the nonsensical bumpers and completely out-of-context commercials to constantly amp up the show’s hype, many memers have taken it upon themselves to reflect on some of the show’s characters.

As a titular character, Morty has undergone some of the most changes and the biggest arc throughout the several seasons that have aired thus far. But at his core, he will always be a teenage boy that’s constantly thrown into impossible situations that are wildly over his head.

The Rickest Morty And The Mortiest Rick

The idea of the “Rickest Rick” and “Mortyest Morty” were concepts introduced by Rick himself earlier on in the series, claiming that a single version of himself has the capability to be more “himself” than any other dimension’s version, and therefore the same would go for Morty. This concept applied, this Twitter user is claiming in this meme that the existence of a Rickest Rick and Mortyest Morty implies the simultaneous existence of a “Rickest Morty” and a “Mortyest Rick” as well.

Alignment chart memes are designed so that the extremes of the categories are shown, and everything else can fit somewhere within the guidelines. So while this meme might be as old as season 3, the recent developments and newly introduced Ricks and Mortys could absolutely fit within this chart in their own respective spaces. Across the board, however, and almost certainly after the true introduction of Prime Rick, the universal agreement seems to be that Morty C-137, our Morty, is certainly the Mortyest Morty of them all.

The Brain Won’t Let Go

It’s probably a pretty safe bet that Morty doesn’t get to sleep right away after days to months at a time going on Rick’s demanded adventures. Though Rick has been known to wipe some of the most traumatic moments from Morty’s mind, it is not to say that enough aren’t still present to keep him from getting a good night’s rest.

Another very relatable meme, the memories that keep people up range anywhere from excitement to trauma to embarrassment and cringe. No matter what it is, this meme uses what is quickly becoming a classic meme format to tell a joke that most definitely applies to Morty as well.

Desensitization

In the last two seasons, Morty has been shown to have stopped caring about his place in the world and the things that should be impacting him. While this meme is mainly directed at people who are similarly suffering, Morty is perpetually in a predicament where the hard times just keeps coming.

All of Rick’s chaos desensitizing him to the world is probably just the icing on the already screwed-up cake, but from burying his own body on more than one occasion to the “Vat of Acid” episode, Morty has definitely seen more than the average 14-year-old boy.

Morty Will Do Anything To Avoid Emotional Discussions

Although Rick was never one to talk things out early on in the show, he has been known to, either drunkenly or soberly in later seasons, attempt to subdue Morty’s anxieties regarding their absurd activities by trying to talk him through them. Every once in a while, though, Morty’s common sense will manage to take over.

The idea that Morty would take off sprinting in the other direction the moment that Rick tries to explain himself is both very funny and very accurate, given Morty’s much-developed backbone in more recent episodes and desire to often stay away from Rick’s happenings. That being said, neither one of them has ever been very good at talking about “feelings,” so it’s probably safe to say that they’d both take off running the moment that word comes up.

Morty Fending Off Existential Crises

Seeing as a lot of Rick and Morty seems to deal with the declining mental health of every character within the show, it shouldn’t come to much surprise just how many of the related memes appear to deal with just that.

A reference to the symptoms of depression that isolation can cause, this meme essentially provokes thoughts about productivity and existential dread–yet another apparent constant inner-monologue of Morty’s, something most definitely passed down from his grandfather’s outlook on life.

Hardships Can Quickly Add Up

This popular meme format is great for communicating a multitude of mental states, but the overall consensus appears to be that mental breakdowns are at the core of Rick and Morty, which is something the fan base has latched onto in their memes.

The concept that just the slightest mishap in someone’s day is enough to send them over the edge is a very Morty sentiment indeed, and one that is conveyed perfectly through this meme. It’s understandable that, after everything Morty has gone though, the little things can quickly add up.

It’s Important To Enjoy The Little Things

Another official account gem, this series of three memes use the tag “#MotivationMonday” as an ironic tool to instill the classic Rick and Morty existential dread into the viewer. The first of the three memes is a quote of Morty’s that essentially boils down to “nothing in the world matters, get over it, live your life.”

The quote meant to help Summer get over the fact that Rick repeatedly abandons them and that Morty isn’t technically her real brother seems to be something Morty goes on to live by after the initial shock of burying his own body, so to say it seems to give a bit of insight into who he is would definitely be an understatement.

Started From The Bottom

Rick and Morty‘s origins as a very loose Back to the Future parody sketch is a concept long since forgotten as the show has very much taken on its own absurd, incredibly meta, and completely original life. However, as is the case with any show, to see the original sketches of what the show was derived from and comparing it to what it has come to be is still something incredible to witness.

Morty’s character, both visually and in traits, has developed quite a bit. And while for a long time the creators insisted on an episodic nature in order to avoid arcs and consistent development, it is impossible to combat the changes Morty has undergone since his first few iterations, and it’s almost inspiring to know how far the show as a whole has come.

Morty Can’t Live A Normal Life

As the show has changed a lot since season one, so have the characters. Morty’s old desire to go to school and live a “normal” life seems to be a dream long since abandoned. However, that isn’t to say it didn’t take quite a bit for Rick to rope him into it.

This Tumblr meme is a pretty good representation of Morty’s early-on reluctance to go along on Rick’s adventures. While the audience now has a lot more insight into why Rick was so desperate to get Morty’s attention and rope him into what he deemed “fun,” it doesn’t make the initial interactions any less humorous to rewatch.
