Rick Ross Explains How He Gifted Shaq a Chain That’s Big Enough: ‘This Is Somebody Who’s 7 Feet Tall’ (Exclusive)

Rick Ross may be the biggest boss, but he’s certainly not the tallest.

In October, the founder of the music group Maybach (47) became viral because he gave a chain bearing the name of his publishing house to none other than Shaquille O’Neal. And now, he describes exactly what went into customizing a necklace for a man who stands 7’1″.

“First of all, you have to make sure you get those flawless emeralds, and then the piece has to go with… This is someone who’s 7 feet tall, so his piece is going to look a lot smaller on him than if I was wearing it,” Ross tells PEOPLE.

“So I told them, let’s triple it. It’s no budget. This is for a great friend, Shaq Diesel, Shaq Fu. You know what I mean?”

As Ross explains, he opted for a larger pendant and made sure the “Cuban link was a lot thicker.”

“But man, it was so worth it,” he says. “And it felt good. You know what I’m saying? And I’m glad my friend enjoyed it. He kept texting me for the next few days.”

While O’Neal, 51, and Ross talk about “a lot of different things” via text — including the franchise and some of their other power moves — one thing they’ve bonded over recently is their shared abilities on the microphone.

As part of Ross and Meek Mill’s November album Too good to be true, the musicians teamed up with O’Neal and fellow NBA star Damian Lillard for a remix of the single “Shaq & Kobe.” The collaboration comes three decades after Ross first purchased Shaq’s debut LP, Shaq Diesel1993. His first thought: “this is a real artist.”

“And the more I got to know him, you saw him working with New York MCs and it went on and on,” he says.

“So I respect his gift. So he walked into our joint, he respected my talent, I put that piece of Maybach Music around his neck, man, that meant a lot. You know what I’m saying? That meant a lot Rozay.” ”
