Sanchez graduated from Henry H. Filer High School and Mae M. Walters Elementary School in 1977. He attended Minnesota State University Moorhead on a football scholarship before transferring to the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis in 1979 on a CBS/WCCO journalism scholarship.

While still in college, Sanchez began his broadcasting career at satellite sister station WCCO in Alexandria, Minnesota. He debuted at WSVN in Miami in 1982 and quickly rose to the position of weekend anchor. He also worked for Houston’s KHOU. Sanchez also appeared on MSNBC in 2001. Sanchez left MSNBC in 2003 to return to the Miami television market, where he hosted a local talk show on WTVJ. He later worked as an anchor at WBZL, then a WB affiliate, until joining CNN in 2004.
Sanchez covered national and international news for CNN. He hosted Out in the Open at 8:00 PM ET for eight months, between Paula Zahn and Campbell Brown. On January 18, 2010, he began hosting Rick’s List, a two-hour afternoon show that invites viewers to share their thoughts and questions via social media.
After Campbell Brown’s show was canceled, he retook the 8:00 PM EST slot with an evening version of Rick’s List, running until Parker Spitzer premiered. Sanchez began working as a radio announcer for Florida International University on July 27, 2011, according to The Washington Post. Sanchez began providing analysis for the FIU football team in September 2011.
Furthermore, Sanchez returned to South Florida in 2013 with a weekday radio show on Clear Channel affiliate WIOD 610 AM. However, since October 2015, it is no longer on the radio due to low viewership. On the social platform MOSH, he also actively publishes segments called “In All Honesty”, in which he often reflects from the perspective of the Latin American population, together with journalist Ruben Navarette.
