Rina Sawayama News
After releasing “Sawayama,” her critically praised debut album in 2020, Rina Sawayama has announced a follow-up. On September 2, Dirty Hit will release “Hold the Girl.”
In addition to announcing the album, Rina also released the album’s lead track, the explosive country-pop song “This Hell.”
Before launching into the first stanza of “This Hell,” Rina begins the song with a tribute to Shania Twain. In between glam-rock riffs, Rina sings joking allusions to gay pop stars, using phrases like, “Fuck what they did to Britney, to Lady Di and Whitney.”
The song was co-written by Rina, Vixen, Paul Epworth, and Lauren Aquilina (Demi Lovato, Little Mix), and co-produced by “Sawayama” producer Clarence Clarity and Paul Epworth (Adele, Rihanna).
The upcoming “Hold the Girl” album was written and recorded over the course of the previous 18 months with the assistance of Epworth, Stuart Price (Dua Lipa, the Killers, Madonna), Marcus Andersson (Demi Lovato, Ashnikko), and longtime colleagues Clarity and Aquilina. According to reports, “Hold the Girl” represents a progression in her sound, fusing inspirations from several pop subgenres to deliver a forceful and direct message.
The new single’s author, Rina, said, “I had so much fun writing ‘This Hell.’” I wanted to make a happy and ironic country-pop song because I’ve been listening to a lot of female country artists over the past couple of years. To me, the essence of country music is cosiness, excellent storytelling, and an honest portrayal of the author’s life.
Since I’ve spent my entire career fantasising about working with Paul Epworth, when we finished this song in a single day, I knew it was fate. I tried to include as many famous instances from popular culture as I could, but the song is more than that.
According to her, “It’s an important song for me given the human rights that are being taken away from minorities at a rapid rate in the name of traditional religious beliefs, more specifically I was thinking about the rights being taken away from the LGBTQ community when I wrote this song.”
Fresh off a two-set performance at Coachella and a sold-out tour of the US and UK, Rina also revealed plans for a tour of the UK and Ireland. The tour begins in Newcastle at the O2 City Hall in October and travels to London, where it concludes with a performance at the Brixton Academy.
