Rishi Sunak AXES A-Levels and bans smoking in major fightback speech as he officially scraps HS2’s Manchester leg

RISHI Sunak ANNULLED the Manchester section of HS2, announced a youth smoking ban and scrapped A-Levels as he promised to be Britain’s most radical prime minister ever in a mega Tory conference speech.

The defiant prime minister was in combat mode as he announced a panoply of policies designed to “provide the country with what it so badly needs and is too often denied”.

He declared once and for all that Britain is NOT a racist country.

And he lashed out at awakened extremists who think biological women can have penises.

“My story is a British story,” the Prime Minister proudly told the cheering crowd.

“It’s the story of how a family can go from coming here with little to Downing Street in three generations.”

In his big political comeback speech at the Tory conference, the Prime Minister announced…

  • Abolishing the Manchester section of HS2 and investing £36 billion in transport infrastructure across the Midlands and North instead
  • A smoking ban so that no one under the age of 14 could ever legally buy a cigarette
  • Reducing A-levels and replacing the exam with a new qualification that combines A-Levels and T-Levels
  • The promise of tax cuts as soon as inflation falls
  • Doing “whatever it takes” to stop the ships

After weeks of speculation, the Prime Minister confirmed on the final day of the Tory conference that the Manchester section of HS2 would be cancelled.

Its £36 billion price tag will be reinvested in “Network North”, funding the development and upgrade of “hundreds and hundreds of new projects, big and small, road and rail, bus and rail”.

Billions will be pumped into connecting 50 different stations across the North and Midlands, including Manchester and Liverpool.

And the upgrades will be carried out across the UK’s motorway network, including the A1 dual carriageway.

HS2 is expected to cut journey times between London, Birmingham and Manchester – but only by 30 minutes.

Ignoring the critics, Mr. Sunak insisted that it was right to have “coverage to change direction.”

“HS2 is the ultimate example of the old consensus,” he thundered.

“The result is a project that has more than doubled in cost, has been repeatedly delayed and is not due to arrive here in Manchester for nearly two decades.

“The economic case has weakened greatly with post-Covid business travel changes.”

As well as upgrading northern transport infrastructure, a new development zone will be created in Euston, where thousands of new homes will be built “for new business opportunities for the next generation of home owners”.

Away from HS2, Mr Sunak promised to “put the next generation first” as he announced plans to ban youth smoking and reform A-levels.

Under the new laws, today’s 14-year-olds will never be able to legally purchase fags.

The Prime Minister said smoking costs the country a staggering £17 billion a year.

He said his decision would “save more lives” than any other Conservative party.

And he promised to make it harder for kids to get their hands on vapes.

The gay ban will be a free vote for all MPs, but is likely to pass in the Commons regardless.

Under major education reforms, A-Levels will be scrapped and pupils will be forced to study maths, English and a range of other subjects until they are 18.

“Stolen” college degrees that saddle students with massive debt for insufficient benefits also face the scrap heap.

On the NHS, the Prime Minister turned his attention to striking BMA doctors.

In a scathing rebuke, he said: “They continue to demand huge unaffordable pay rises and that they have decided to walk out this week says it all – this strike is about politics, not patients.”

As for the economy, the Prime Minister promised to bring in tax cuts – but did not specify when.

He said that inflation must first be further reduced.

“I know you want tax cuts, I want them too and we will make them happen.

“But the best tax cut we can give people right now is to cut inflation in half and cut the cost of living.”

Turning his attention to Labour, the Prime Minister lashed out at Sir Keir Starmer, calling him “the walking definition of the 30-year political status quo”.

Mr Sunak warned that Sir Keir was desperate to bring Britain back under the rule of Brussels.

He also claimed that Labor hates Brexit and does not believe Westminster will take back control.

“I haven’t forgotten the irony,” said Mr. Sunak.

“While we are busy thinking about the future of the UK, Kier Starmer is banging on about Europe.”

Standing tall against awakened thugs, the Prime Minister vowed never to bow down to extremist trans activists.

He refused to give in to the awakened ideologues who make people believe that a woman can have a penis.

And he said teachers should be forced to tell parents if their children are considering gender reassignment.

“It shouldn’t be controversial for parents to know what their children are being taught in school about relationships,” he demanded.

“Patients should know when hospitals are talking about men or women and we shouldn’t be intimidated into believing that people can be any gender. They can’t.

“A man is a man and a woman is a woman. It’s just common sense.”

Just before the prime minister’s appearance on the stage, the first “bunny” came out of his hat.

His wife, Akshata Murty, surprised the conference by giving a personal and passionate hype speech.

Mrs Murty, wearing a pink sports suit, described how she fell in love with the prime minister and how the years of long-distance driving were tough.

“What attracted me most about him was his strength of character, his honesty, his integrity, with a firm understanding of right from wrong,” she said.

“He is funny, thoughtful, compassionate and has an incredible zest for life.”

At the end of his speech, the Prime Minister promised to be “brave” and “radical”.

When the activists stood up, he said: “We will be brave, we will be radical, we will face the resistance and we will meet it.

“We will give the country what it so desperately needs and is too often denied: a government ready to make long-term decisions so that we can build a brighter future for all.

“Don’t doubt it.

“It’s time for change and we are it.”

Responding to the Prime Minister’s speech, Pat McFadden MP, Labour’s national campaign co-ordinator, said: “After 13 years and five Tory prime ministers, Rishi Sunak’s latest desperate attempt to reset his weak leadership and divided government will not fool the British public who look at Tory failures all around them.

“The Tories have failed Britain for too long. They cannot be the change of their own failures.

The damage they would do with another five years would be unbearable for working people.
