RK Mathur is a 1977-batch IAS officer from Tripura cadre. His first posting was as District Manager and Collector of West Tripura. He has held many important positions in the Tripura Government such as Tripura Tribal Territory Council CEO, Panchayat Commissioner, Revenue Commissioner, Tripura Resident, Tripura State Chief Secretary, Tripura Chief Secretary etc.
RK Mathur assumes office
On October 1, 2012, he was appointed by the Appointments Committee of Cabinet (ACC) as Federal Minister of Defense Production for a term of two years. On December 18, 2015, Mathur was appointed as Chief Information Commissioner (CIC) of India. He served on the Construction Industry Council’s Investment Committee until his retirement on 24 November 2018.

On October 25, 2019, Mathur was nominated by Indian President Ram Nath Kovind as the first Lieutenant Governor of the newly established Union Territory of Ladakh. On October 31, 2019, he was sworn in as the first Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh. He was sworn in as the first Governor of Jammu and Kashmir on the same day Governor Murmu was sworn in as the first Governor of Jammu and Kashmir.
