Career

Blue Ribbon Sports (now Nike) filed suit against Onitsuka in 1972. As the company imported running shoes, it cooperated with Onitsuka to import Japanese items. Nike founder Phil Knight eventually sued the Japanese corporation for breach of contract. To win the case, Knight hired Rob and the corporation was successful in 1974. Despite the fact that the corporation encountered audit and management problems the following year, these were eventually corrected. In fact, Rob was appointed Marketing Director after playing a significant role in the success of the sports brand.
After rebranding, Nike became an independent American shoe manufacturer. Rob continued to market the brand’s products brilliantly, resulting in a huge increase in sales over the years. In fact, its revenues exceeded $100 million in 1978. Converse and Adidas led the basketball footwear industry in 1984, while Nike had a 17% market share. The company started losing money and laying off employees. They chose to sign Michael Jordan, and Rob was instrumental in convincing him to sign even though he preferred to go to Adidas.
The ‘Air Jordan’ concept was a big factor in Jordan signing with Nike. Jordan was fined for wearing shoes that were only 51% white. When Rob used those strict NBA guidelines to sell products, Nike reimbursed him. In the first year alone, the company sold 162 million dollars. Strasser was considered the man who saved Nike because of his numerous contributions to the company. As the corporation began to dominate the United States, he moved to the Netherlands to take over Europe.
But things didn’t stay that way forever, as he left Nike after repeated disputes with CEO Knight. Peter Moore went with him and together they started a new consulting company Sports Inc. He later worked for Nike’s rival Adidas, where he was CEO of Adidas America. When he took over the company, he moved it from New Jersey to Portland. However, he died in 1993.
