Roger Binny is a former Indian cricketer who won the 1983 Cricket World Cup with the Indian team. He was the first Anglo-Indian cricketer to play for India. He is primarily a bowling all-rounder who can bat lower down the order and bowl at medium pace. Apart from that, he is also a nimble outfielder.

The initial phase
He made his debut at the age of 20 against Kerala in Raichur. He was not successful in that match but the next season he scored 71 runs and took 4 wickets against Maharashtra. That season, he became the leading run-scorer with 563 runs, including 174 against Andhra Pradesh at home. Earlier in his career, he scored an unbeaten 211 in a first-class match against Kerala when he partnered wicket-keeper Sanjay Desai to take the opening wicket of 451 points. Karnataka declared the innings without losing a wicket. This record was broken until Ravi Sehgal and Raman Lamba in 1994-95.

In 1979, he made his international debut against Pakistan and scored 46 points, taking the team’s score to 411 points. However, he struggled with the ball and ended the period without taking any wickets. In the next game against the same team, he went 2-for-32 and 2-for-56 respectively. In that match, he took the crucial wickets of Imran Khan and Zaheer Abbas. He made his ODI debut in the 1980 Benson & Hedges World Cup series against Australia and he impressed with the ball. Australia went all out and scored 142 runs and Binny took 2 wickets in that match and scored 23 runs. In the next game, he took 4 wickets and scored 41 runs.

In the group match against Australia, he took 4 wickets and scored 29 runs, helping India reach the semi-finals. In an interview, he recalled the 1983 World Cup final, saying:
“When we were bowled out for 183 we knew we had messed up. The atmosphere in the dressing room was bad and we had a long lunch break which meant we had more time to think. But just before we left, Card Peel spoke. He said, “The game is not over yet and if we can get out for 183, we should try and beat them for less. “That’s exciting for us.”
He took the crucial wicket of captain Clive Lloyd in the 1983 World Cup final and scored 21 runs, helping India win the World Cup. He said in an interview,
“Lloyd got injured in the last game and Kapil came to me and said, ‘He’s stuck in the crease and can’t move, just push the ball away a little bit and force him to drive.’ That’s exactly what I did. , and Lloyd left.”

In the league stage match against the West Indies, he dismissed wicketkeepers Jeff Duhon, Clive Lloyd and Vivian Richards to help India defeat the West Indies for the first time in the World Cup. He then took 3 for 27 against Zimbabwe, which India won by 31 runs. In that match, he had a crucial partnership of 60 for the sixth wicket with Kapil Dev. It is said that Kapil Dev’s 175 runs would not have been possible without this partnership. He recalled in an interview,
“What I remember most clearly is that I had no time to relax at all during that time! Usually, after we finished training and the first two batsmen came on, I would go to the canteen, grab a tea or coffee and watch the first few games, Relax and drink whatever you want but that day, I reluctantly came back with my tea to find we were two teams behind! I was actually still in my training clothes when I ran to change and the third wicket fell. .The fourth one fell off before I could put on the pads! As I moved on, we were four to nine and then five to six. I was the number seven batsman. My mind went blank: I didn’t plan anything, I didn’t strategize, and when I moved on, Kapil Dev was still there. I still remember his first words to me: “Stay! “
In the next match against Australia, he scored a crucial 21 runs and took 4 wickets, which earned him the Man of the Match award. Then into the semi-finals, he took two wickets to help India reach the final.

He made his debut with the bat in September 1983 against Pakistan at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Madras (now Chennai). When Binny came in to bat, India posted 85 for 6 in a single session and scored a vital 155-run partnership with Madan Lal. He scored 83 runs and helped India score 275 runs in the first innings. The game ended in a draw. In the 1983-84 season against a strong West Indies line-up, he dismissed Gordon Greenidge, Desmond Haynes and Vivian Richards to finish with 3 wickets and 6 An 18-point performance in the round ended his career. He subsequently scored 39 runs in Kanpur, 32 runs in Delhi, 65 runs in Bombay and 44 runs in Calcutta (now Calcutta). In the 1985-86 World Series, he took 4 for 35 in the first game, followed by 1 for 33 against England, 3 for 27 against Australia, and 1 for 28 against New Zealand in the semi-finals. However, he missed the last game due to injury. Throughout the series, he became the second-highest wicket-taker behind Laxman Sivaramakrishnan and the second-highest wicket-taker behind Joel Garner High bowling average. His best bowling performance came in a Test match against England at Headingley in 1986, when he took seven wickets in two innings and helped India win that match by 279 runs. Later on the 1986 tour of England, he took 4 wickets at Lord’s and took 5 for 40 at Leeds United, with Mike Gatting and Allan Lamb Lamb’s important wicket, impressive. He then scored 40 runs in the third Test against England at Edgbaston. The best performance of his career was against Pakistan at Eden Gardens (Kolkata) in 1987, when he took 6 wickets and scored 56 runs. However, despite this performance, he could only bowl three overs in his Test career. He missed the fourth Test at Motera due to an ankle injury. He was subsequently selected for the 1987 Cricket World Cup but played only one match against Australia in Chennai on 9 October. There, he took the wicket of Australia captain Allan Border. After that performance, the selectors prioritized Manoj Prabhakar and Chetan Sharma to assist Kapil Dev as the opening bowlers. In 1987, he retired from international cricket. However, he continued to play domestic cricket until 1992.

After retiring, he became the coach of the India U-19 team and won the 2000 World Cup under the leadership of Mohammad Kaif. In 2009, he was appointed as the head coach of Bangladesh team in Ranji Trophy. In 2012, he remained the national selector of the Indian cricket team.
