Facts/Trivia

  • Rohit became interested in sports after watching his father win many medals in athletics. Previously, his family’s financial situation was not good and they could not afford to buy a javelin pole. Rohit’s father then made the javelin shaft out of bamboo. Rohit spoke about this in an interview and said,

My father was an athlete. But he insisted that I should become a javelin thrower. But there was not enough money to buy a suitable javelin. So what he did was go to a patch of bamboo that was growing near our village and use it. Making a javelin from wild bamboo is not easy. You have to take only the top part of the bamboo. Otherwise it will become too thick. Then you have to sharpen one end so it can fly well. It won’t last long. I might throw it for two or three days and then it would be completely destroyed. And you can’t throw very far with it because bamboo is never perfectly straight. I don’t think I’ve ever thrown a javelin over 30 meters with baans. “

In an interview, his father talked about using bamboo to make javelin shafts. He said,

I made that javelin out of bamboo. I have a picture of a javelin to guide me. I’m not following any set specs about size, weight, or anything like that. A shoddy javelin is detrimental to the opponent. Rohit used it for two years. This helped him compete at the state level, providing athletes with better javelin throws. Then we bought a javelin from Patiala for Rs 12,000. “

The principal of his school gave him a javelin stick worth Rs 12,000.

  • Rohit trains under the same coach Uwe Hohn along with Olympic gold medalist Neeraj Chopra.
  • In 2017, the Indian sports consulting company “Amentum Sports” helped him, and Peruvian javelin coach Michael Musselman provided guidance through video calls. In an interview, Rohit said about coaching:

The coach asked me to record my throw from two different angles and then send him the video via Whatsapp or Facebook. He would analyze them and suggest what changes I had to make. “
