He currently plays keyboards and sings lead for the rock band Kansas. Robby Steinhardt, a former Kansas co-lead vocalist and violinist, passed away in 2021 as a result of severe pancreatitis and septic shock.

Before local gigs, Kansas frontman Ronnie Platt discusses his day job, TV fame, and new music.

As a huge admirer of Kansas and the former lead vocalist of Shooting Star, Ronnie Platt never dreamt that one day he would be leading the legendary rock group that is best known for songs like “Carry On Wayward Son” and “Dust in the Wind.”

After former Kansas frontman Steve Walsh retired in 2014, Platt took over and has since performed hundreds of times with the group. Upcoming performances include those on September 9 at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio and September 15 at the Bank of America Performing Arts Centre in Thousand Oaks.

In a recent phone interview, Platt said, “Kansas fans can expect high energy, diverse music, and a couple of hours of helping people forget their problems.” That is what we typically bring.

The niece of former Styx frontman Dennis DeYoung texted Platt to inform him of Walsh’s retirement. She was Platt’s lifelong acquaintance and was aware of his passion for Kansas. He initially didn’t give it much thought and believed a replacement was coming soon. On the other hand, he casually messaged Kansas guitarist Rich Williams on Facebook about the gig.

The following day, Williams responded and organised a call with Kansas drummer Phil Ehart, the other surviving founding member, to arrange a meeting time. They were aware of Platt’s work and heard that he was a major Kansas fan, so they didn’t need to see him perform in an audition.

He recounted, “I was driving my 18-wheeler around the lovely streets of Chicago the next morning, back at work, and I checked my email, and it was from Phil Ehart telling me I won the job. It’s astonishing to realise that was eight years ago.

As a child in Chicago, Platt listened to his elder sister’s LPs, which featured many of the rock acts who were ascending the charts at the time. He also recalls listening to AM radio when stations didn’t focus on a particular genre the way they do now.

One radio station would play such a variety of music, he claimed. You would hear a Jackson 5 song, then a Led Zeppelin tune. It was quite varied.

Progressive rock was introduced to Platt as he grew older, and he was instantly enamoured. He eventually became interested in bands like Yes, Genesis, and Rush. One of those bands was Kansas. I missed the 1980s hair bands because I was so engrossed in that sophisticated music, he admitted.
