Rory McIlroy got emotional talking about his wife Erica Stoll and daughter Poppy after winning the DP World Tour Championship on Sunday, November 17 in Dubai.
The 35-year-old golfer — who ended his divorce from Stoll in June after filing for divorce on May 13 — spoke to Sky Sports after his win at Jumeirah Golf Estates.
McIlroy reportedly held back tears as he told the newspaper that the support of his wife of seven years “means a lot” to him. “I’ve been through a lot this year professionally, personally,” McIlroy said, describing his championship victory as “a fitting end to 2024.” during an interview with Sky Sports.
“It’s been a good year, but I’m very happy with where I am in my career and in my life, and I feel like everything has worked out the way it was supposed to,” continued McIlroy, who told the news outlet that he feels “a lot of pressure that I self-inflicted” on the golf course this year.

“I like to end the year on a positive note. Maybe I felt a little more pressure than I should have,” he said.

Stoll was on the sidelines with their four-year-old daughter as McIlroy sealed his victory on Sunday. “Their support means everything to me,” McIlroy told CNN reporters.
“Being able to show Poppy what happened today and maybe some of the reasons why I’m gone all the time because I’m working or training … it’s amazing that they were here with me this week and I’m excited to celebrate with them.”

PEOPLE confirmed on May 13 that McIlroy’s attorney filed for divorce from the golfer’s seven-year marriage to Stoll.
But on June 11, a notice of voluntary dismissal was filed on McIlroy’s behalf in a court in Palm Beach, PEOPLE reported at the time.

Speaking with The Guardian After filing to dismiss the divorce, McIlroy said: “Recently there have been rumors about my personal life, which is unfortunate. Responding to every rumor is a crazy game.”
McIlroy explained that he and Stoll “realized that our best future as a family was together” after giving up on their divorce. “Fortunately, we have resolved our differences and we look forward to a new beginning,” he added.
