Rose Zhang News
The past two weeks have been extremely busy for Rose Zhang, as she won back-to-back NCAA singles titles 11 days ago. She then defeated Jennifer Kupcho in a two-hole playoff to win in her pro debut, making LPGA history.
Zhang puts her name in the record books, according to ESPN Stats & Info. Beverly Hanson was the last woman to win a professional golf tournament on her first try 72 years ago. With this victory, she earns full membership on the LPGA Tour and qualifies for the Solheim Cup.
At the Mizuho Open, Rose Zhang makes LPGA history that even Tiger Woods will admire.
Zhang got off to a strong start to the competition with a 70. He shot a 69 on the second day to maintain his position at the top of the rankings. On opening day, Zhang hit a bogeyless 66 to take a one-stroke lead.
He had an up-and-down day on Sunday, posting a score of 74, his highest score of the week, but Zhang persevered. He was undaunted and successfully saved par from 10 feet on the 17th hole to maintain his one-shot lead. A woeful bogey on the 72nd hole forced a playoff with Kupcho, who finished with a 69 in the final round. On the first playoff hole of 18, both players sank a couple of putts.
The second round of the playoff this time was on the 18th. Zhang’s second shot, which rolled seven feet for birdie, was amazing.
Kupcho missed a great opportunity with 63 feet to go. He lost the competition because of his mistake. Zhang two-putted 7-footers for par and his first LPGA win.
He accomplished the unthinkable and triumphed in his first LPGA game. Zhang finished T60 in his PGA Tour debut, something Tiger Woods couldn’t do. With 12 wins, he previously surpassed Tiger’s Stanford record. Zhang goes on to complete his narration and add his name to another page in the annals of history.
