Friends and family of a Brisbane man who drowned after falling overboard on a Hawaii-bound cruise ship have described him as a “kind, beautiful and gentle soul” since the search for the missing Australian was called off. On Wednesday, 1,400 kilometers south of Hawaii, Warwick Tollemache, 35, fell into the sea while vacationing with his mother, Mandy Tollemache, on the Royal Caribbean Quantum of the Seas cruise ship. His family dealt with a great loss when the official search for him was called off Friday. His girlfriend said she was “just devastated” by the election.
Celine La Roche told the Courier Mail: “They should have kept looking, I don’t understand why they stopped looking.” The duo had spoken the morning before the disaster and were making arrangements for another trip, she said in the tragic revelation. Before the disaster, “we talked in the morning, planning another trip,” La Roche recalled. “Last month we sailed in the South Pacific and I was planning to move in with him.
“He informed me that we would be traveling to France to visit my family and on a Mediterranean cruise. I was still hopeful until I found out that the search had been called off and he might be alive in the middle of nowhere.” Until they find it, she says, she won’t be satisfied.
Mr. Tollemache was reported missing on April 12 while the ship was sailing in the Pacific Ocean near the island of Honolulu. The ship still had two days to reach Hawaii. In a statement issued Thursday, Quantum of the Seas said “the ship’s crew immediately launched a search and rescue operation and is coordinating closely with local authorities.” The cruiser remained nearby for several hours before turning the search over to an aerial search team.
