Rudy Giuliani, the former mayor of New York and one-time lawyer for former President Donald Trump, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on Thursday, citing debts of nearly $500 million.
Sockets included The Washington Post report that Giuliani, 79, is citing losses stemming from tax liabilities, as well as money he owes his lawyers as he navigates the rampant mini-lawsuit, as well as millions of dollars in legal judgments.
Giuliani’s bankruptcy filing comes nearly a week after a jury in Washington, DC, ordered him to pay more than $148 million to two Georgia election workers for defamatory statements he made about them after the 2020 election.

The defamation suit was filed by poll workers – Ruby Freeman and her daughter Shaye Moss – who sued Giuliani after he released a video he claims shows rigging the election in favor of Joe Biden, following Donald Trump’s defeat in the 2020 presidential election.
The women were awarded $20 million each for emotional distress and a total of $75 million in punitive damages. Freeman was awarded $16 million in defamation claims, while Moss received nearly $17 million.
In the statement for Fast, a Giuliani spokesman said of Thursday’s bankruptcy filing: “The filing should not surprise anyone. No one could reasonably believe that Mayor Rudy Giuliani could pay such a high fine.”

Once known as “America’s mayor” after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, Giuliani has faced a number of controversies in recent years — many of them related to his relationship with Trump and the time he spent at news conferences and television and courtroom appearances as would challenge the results of the 2020 elections.

Giuliani’s public appearances were notable not only for their content, but also for the lawyer’s combative tone (and, in one viral moment, his appearance with what appeared to be hair dye running down his face during a live press conference).

After spending months arguing, without proof, that the election was stolen from Trump, Giuliani and other allies of the former president failed to prove their case, and many of their claims were thrown out of court entirely.
Giuliani faces several financial challenges in addition to a recent lawsuit in Georgia, and in recent months he has been sued by his former lawyers and Dominion Voting Systems over his false election conspiracy claims.
In August, Giuliani was indicted on 13 felony charges along with Trump and several other allies in Fulton County, Georgia, for allegedly conspiring to interfere in the state’s 2020 election results. He pleaded not guilty to all charges and has yet to appear in court.

In September, CNN data reporter Harry Enten cited polls showing that Giuliani’s approval rating had fallen by some 60 points over the past 21 years.
