The singer-songwriter announced two months ago that he was fighting an illness.

The frontman, who replaced original lead singer Donnie Munro, was a mainstay of the Scottish rock group from the time he joined in 1998 until the band’s last show in 2018.

Former bandmate Pete Wishart, now an SNP politician, revealed the tragic news on social media and spoke on BBC Radio Scotland’s Drivetime program tonight.

Canadian-born Bruce has been forced to cancel several live shows in recent years due to his failing health.

Wishart, MP for Perth and North Perthshire, said: “He was simply the nicest person you could ever hope to meet and it was a pleasure to perform with him.

“An exceptional singer, musician and songwriter taken too soon. We will miss him.

“We have lost a friend, but we will never be able to hear this beautiful singing voice live again.”

The musician, married to his wife Kim, left behind two children who followed in his musical footsteps.

Both Dylan and Jodi are building successful careers in the industry, having previously performed with their father.

Runrig’s statement read: “It is with the heaviest of hearts and deep sadness that we inform you of the news that Bruce passed away last night, after finally losing his long battle with cancer that stretched back many years.

“Everyone associated with Runrig is devastated by the loss of a dear friend and such a special musical colleague.

“Our immediate thoughts and prayers are with Kim, Dylan and Jodie at this time.”

Folk singer Julie Fowlis, who collaborated with Runrig, shared her tribute on Twitter.

She said: “Shocked and saddened to learn that Bruce Guthro has died. He was such a gifted singer and powerful performer.

“It has been one of my greatest privileges to sing with him on stage and backstage over the years. Love and condolences to his family and all of Runrig.”

Kate Forbes, SNP MSP for Skye, Lochaber and Badenoch, wrote:

“I am incredibly saddened to hear this news and my deepest sympathies go out to the family, friends and band members of Bruce Guthro.

“His powerful voice lives on, as generations continue to listen to his beautiful music.”

Fans of the band – known for their energetic Celtic rock – said they were heartbroken by the news.

Alexander MacDonald said: “What a talent to enjoy, an amazing voice and the only one to take over from Donnie.

“Thank you for everything, Bruce.”

And Penelope Bailey added: “It was an honor to watch him live. Pray with his family and friends and his legacy will live on in our hearts.”

The group is best known for singing the Scottish anthem Loch Lomond.

Scottish Celtic rockers Runrig brought the curtain down on a 45-year career in 2018.

The band, formed in 1973, celebrated with a final farewell concert in Scotland that summer.

Entitled The Last Dance, it was held in Stirling City Park against the backdrop of Stirling Castle on 18 August 2018.

One of the biggest events the band has ever organized, the celebration was a thank you to those who have followed Runrig over the decades.
