After the NFL team lost a Christmas Eve game to the New England Patriots, head coach Sean Payton he told reporters on Wednesday that Wilson, 35, will not play in the Broncos’ two remaining regular-season games. The team is still in playoff contention, although NFL.com’s odds currently give the 7-8 team just a 7% chance of making the postseason.
“God is watching over me,” Wilson — who has been Denver’s starting quarterback since the team acquired him in 2022 — wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter) on Wednesday night, seemingly in response to his benching. “I’m looking forward to what’s next.”

Like Wilson’s of “likes” on his X profile show, he responded to various social media posts from fans, analysts and former players showing support for him after the team benched him. “Mad respect for how you’ve handled this whole situation,” former NFL running back Robert Griffin III wrote to Wilson on Wednesday in one X post which Wilson “liked”.
Griffin’s post continued, “When you were belittled, you still showed respect. When you were threatened, you led your team to victories. When you were knocked down, you continued to build your boys up and never wavered. God has your back.”
Wilson signed a five-year contract extension with Denver a few months after joining the team in 2022 and is expected to start next season, ESPN reported at the time. The Super Bowl quarterback’s contract includes a $37 million release clause if he doesn’t pass a physical through March 2024, leaving some to speculate that the Broncos’ personnel decision was driven by a desire to prevent Wilson from suffering an injury the rest of the regular season, according to ESPN.

“Most of you know we made a change at quarterback and I understand all the speculation and everything that surrounds a move like that, and I can tell you … look, we’re desperate to win,” Payton he told reporters On Wednesday when he announced the change of quarterback.
He added, “Sure, in our game today, there’s economy and all that stuff, but the main drive behind this — and that’s the decision I’m making — is to get a spark on offense.”
Jarrett Stidham will start for the Broncos on Sunday against the Los Angeles Charges. Wilson will be available as a backup in the meantime, Payton announced.
The Broncos have won 11 games and lost 19 with Wilson as the starting quarterback over the last two seasons. Before joining Denver, Wilson played the first 10 seasons of his career with the Seattle Seahawks and won the 2014 Super Bowl with the team.
