Clutching a tissue and with tears in her eyes, Ruth told Hello!: “That first week when I didn’t have him at home I literally felt like a piece of my heart had been ripped out.

“I kept his bedroom door closed.

“I remember going into his bedroom and crying and grabbing the pillow, and I could smell him on the pillow, and I had a good old cry, and then I closed the door and then that first week was horrible because I was just used to it to have him around.”

Blue Peter legend Katy Hill commented: “Oh my god! Sr going to university in September and you cracked me up @ruthlangsford! I feel you xxx.”

Another posted: “I feel your pain. I cried when my boys went to college and sobbed all week when my oldest left home recently. I miss you so much xx.”

Jack, who studied broadcast journalism at Salford University, turned 21 earlier this year and was spoiled by his parents on his special day.

He posed in front of his many birthday balloons with mum Ruth on one side and dad Eamonn Holmes on the other.

Ruth wrote: “Wonderful weekend spent celebrating our son Jack’s 21st birthday… where have those years gone?!!! I had to decorate my birthday table, of course… it’s a family tradition.”

In another photo, Ruth kissed him on the cheek while they were sitting in a restaurant.

She joked: “You’re never too old to kiss your mommy.”
