The Murder of Barbara Waite

On March 31, 2020, Ryan Grantham shot his mother, Barbara Waite, in the back of the head while she was inside their Squamish home play piano. Apparently, his mother was battling cancer at the time. Grantham recorded a video shortly after, admitting to the murder. He then drove away with the intention of assassinating Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. He loaded a car with three guns, ammunition and 12 bottles of his homemade Molotov cocktails and drove about 200 kilometers east to Hope, en route to Trudeau’s Rideau Cottage residence. At some point, he changed his mind and decided to commit a mass shooting, possibly at Simon Fraser University, where he had attended. However, he did not carry out either plan and instead surrendered to police in Vancouver on April 1, 2020, admitting to killing his mother. Grantham was immediately taken into custody. He was initially charged with first-degree murder, but later pleaded guilty to second-degree murder.

trial and conviction

During the trial, Ryan’s lawyer Chris Johnson claimed Grantham had been suffering from multiple documented mental health issues, including anxiety, clinical depression and suicidal thoughts. Johnson also revealed that Grantham felt the need to kill his mother to spare her the consequences of the crimes he planned to commit. On September 23, 2022, Ryan was found guilty of murdering his mother in the Supreme Court of British Columbia. He was declared eligible for parole during the sentencing process 14 years later. The court also imposed a lifetime firearms ban on Grantham.
