Sheikh Abdul Nazeer was born on Sunday, January 5, 1958, in Beluvai village, Dakshina Kannada district, Karnataka state, India (65 years as of 2023) . He grew up in Mudabidri, Karnataka. Nazeer studied at Jain High School Moodubidire in Karnataka. He pursued his bachelor’s degree in commerce from Sri Mahaveera College, Mudabidri, Karnataka. He later obtained a law degree from SDM Law College in Mangalore, Karnataka, becoming the first in his family to pursue a legal career.

Abdul Nazeer has participated in many significant judgments including Triple Talaq case (Shayara Bano v Union of India) (2017), Fundamental Privacy case (Justice KS Puttaswamy v Union of India) (2017), Ayodhya dispute (M. Siddiq) v Mahant Suresh Das) (2019), and Union’s 2016 demonetization plan (2023). Nazir was the only Muslim among the multi-faith benches to hear the triple talaq case; the bill was rejected by lawmakers by a 3:2 majority and asked the central government to legislate marriage and divorce within six months for the Muslim community. As part of a three-judge bench hearing on an appeal in the Ayodhya ownership dispute, Abdul Nazir upheld the ASI report that confirmed the presence of Hindu structures in the disputed area and ruled in favor of Ram Man Deere’s decision capped off years of long debate and a 5-0 verdict.

  • Abdul Nazeer grew up as a farmer in his uncle’s farmhouse. He even scoured Mangalore’s Panampur beach for fish, which washed ashore and contributed to his family’s income.
  • In college, Abdul Nazir loved theater. He directed a number of theatrical productions, for which he wrote dialogue and composed songs. Nazir was the female lead in one of his plays.
