Sabrina Carpenter Shares the Surprising Reason Why She Doubted Whether People Would 'Connect' with Her Hit 'Espresso'

Sabrina Carpenter didn’t expect “Espresso” to percolate the way it did.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter released on Dec. 30, the “Please Please Please” singer talked about how she wasn’t sure anyone would connect with the song, which was the most streamed song on Spotify in 2024 with more than 1.6 billion streams.

Carpenter, 25, who partnered with Dunkin’ Donuts for her Sabrina’s Brown Sugar Shakin’ Espresso drink, said “kismet is how it worked out” because the pop song became so popular.

When Carpenter released the song in April, she wasn’t sure if it would “connect” because of the weather. “I remember I decided to release this song at the beginning of summer and I thought espresso, coffee was more of a fall drink,” she explained.

“I didn’t really know if it would connect, but the feel and the sound of the song and the confidence that it kind of carried with it was something that I really believed in.”

“So I literally had no idea that anyone was going to like it, but I did, and that was kind of all that mattered to me at that moment, and something that I try to remember over and over again,” she added.

“Espresso” appears on Carpenter’s acclaimed album Short and sweet, which earned the pop star six 2025 Grammy nominations, including album of the year and best pop solo performance for “Espresso.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Carpenter talked about how “infectious” the song is.

“I think that’s the whole point. It’s like it’s addictive. It’s really kismet how it turned out,” she mused. “I didn’t write it with that in mind. So I’m really happy to hear it. But thank you for listening so many times, even if you didn’t realize it.”

She said The Guardian in August that she wrote “Espresso” as a “manifestation tactic” because “at that point, nobody liked me romantically — nobody was obsessed with me.”

“I didn’t have anyone to even talk to,” Carpenter said at the time, adding that she was “always a little delusional, in that sense.”
