Sadhu Singh Dharamsot was elected coordinator of the Youth Congress at the age of twenty. In 1992, he contested the Punjab Assembly elections from Amloh constituency and won. The then chief minister of Punjab, Bit Singh, appointed Dharamsot as deputy minister (youth welfare). In 2002, he contested the Punjab Assembly elections for the second time from Amro constituency and won. The then Chief Minister of Punjab, Captain Amarinder Singh, appointed him as Parliamentary Secretary (Public Works Department, Family and Juvenile Welfare). In the 2012 Punjab Assembly elections, Sadhu Singh Dharamso contested from Nabha Assembly constituency and won the election by defeating SAD candidate Balwant Singh by 22,548 votes. In 2017, Sadhu Singh Dharamsot won the Punjab Legislative Assembly election from the Nabha constituency as a candidate of the Indian National Congress. Soon after winning the election, he was appointed Minister of Forests and Social Welfare. Sadhu Singh Dharamsot served as a member of the Punjab Legislative Assembly for five terms. However, in the 2022 Punjab Legislative Assembly elections, he was defeated by Aam Aadmi Party candidate Gudev Singh Mann by a margin of 51,554 votes from Nabha constituency.

On June 7, 2022, Sadhu Singh Dharamsot was booked by the Punjab Vigilance Directorate under Prevention of Corruption Act and Section 120-B of IPC on corruption charges in the Forest Department scam case. (Conspiracy) case was registered, causing controversy. He was involved in the conspiracy when he was minister in Captain Amarinder Singh’s cabinet and chief of the forest department. A few days before their arrest, Guramanpreet Singh (district forest officer) and Harminder Singh Hummy (contractor) were also detained by the police for their involvement in the scam. Sadhu Singh was charged for illegally cutting down more than 25,000 trees. In 2020, he was charged by the Punjab Vigilance Directorate in the ‘Post Matric Scholarship’ scam for allowing illegal scholarships to be provided to private colleges and universities in Punjab. During the Master Scholarship Scam, Sadhu Singh Dharamsot was serving as Minister of Social Security in the name of the Indian National Congress Party. On January 15, 2024, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) arrested Sadhu from Jalandhar under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) in the case.
