On March 12, 1995, she got married to AR Rahman, one of India’s top music composers, singers, and songwriters. It was an arranged marriage. AR Rahman told his mother that he had three criteria for choosing a girl. These criteria were that his future wife should be educated, beautiful, and modest. Later, his mother fell in love with a girl in a mosque. Her name was Meher, and she was Saira’s sister. Rahman’s mother and sisters went to Meher’s house to meet her father, but when she saw Saira, she decided to choose her as her daughter-in-law. In an interview, AR Rahman talked about his marriage. He said,

We talked about it before we got married, otherwise we would have split up a long time ago. That’s how I positioned her. I told her that if we had dinner planned and a song came on, we would have to forgo dinner.”

The couple has three children, two daughters and a son. Their eldest daughter, Khatija Rahman, is a musician and director and trustee of the AR Rahman Foundation, and she always wears a burqa. Their son, AR Ameen, is a dubbing singer, and their youngest daughter is Rahima Rahman.

  • Before marrying AR, Saira was a huge fan of his and one of her favourite songs was ‘Urvasi Urvasi’ from the Tamil film ‘Kadhalan’ (1994).
