Saira Shah Halim is an Indian politician, social and political activist, theater artist, educationist and corporate trainer. She is famous for being the niece of Indian actor Nasiruddin Shah. In April 2022, she contested the Ballygunge Assembly polls as a candidate of the Communist Party of India (Marxist).

In an interview, Saira recalled the day she announced her candidacy, saying:
As we were getting ready to travel to Assam, I got a call from the senior leadership asking if I could join the fight. I was surprised, but I was ready. “
The Ballygunge by-election will be held on April 12, 2022, after the TMC stronghold seat fell vacant following the death of senior Trinamool leader and cabinet minister Subrata Mukherjee in November 2021. Saira is campaigning aggressively against singer-turned-politician, former Minister of State for Environment, Forests and climate change Babul Supriyo of the Trinamool Congress (TMC).
In an interview, Saira revealed that although it was her first time participating in polls, she was no stranger to politics. she says,
I’ve been there, done that. In my family, dinner table conversation has always been about politics. Only this time, I am the candidate. This party has been an integral part of my life for the past twenty years, it gave me a challenge and I took it. “

Saira worked at Poetry Couture, a charity project aimed at reviving the culture of poetry and prose reading. Saira has been invited as a speaker at the Calcutta Literary Festival on several occasions. She is one of the founding members of Poetry Paradigm, a Kolkata-based non-profit organization. Other members of the club include Joie Bose, Ashoke Viswanathan, Ananya Chatterjee and Arthur Cardozo.
Saira also contributes to Kolkata blog The Beacon Kolkata. Shah planned several cultural and literary projects in Kolkata. Halim also participated in the Sampark Literary Night. I have been outspoken on all platforms (TV debates, digital conclave and public meetings) on the rights of religious minorities, the issue of the headscarf ban and the rights of the LGBTQ+ community. Local cadres proposed my name to the party because I have my own political identity. I will go door to door speaking to voters. I have my own vision for the constituency. “

I lived in many places due to my father’s position, I studied in a boarding school in Ooty and went to college in Rajasthan. Army families never really feel attached to any one place – that’s how we grew up – but Calcutta gave me my identity. This is my city and I am proud to serve the people of this state. “
