Sajjan Kumar was born on 23 September 1945 in Delhi, British India, to a Jat family (age 73; as of 2018). He had gained admission to university and was educated mostly at home in Delhi. Sajjan Kumar’s family was financially poor, and according to sources, during his childhood, Sajjan Kumar had to sell tea to support his family’s livelihood. As he entered his youth, he became interested in politics and frequently participated in political discourse.

Sajjan Kumar’s father’s name is Raghunath Singh and his mother’s name is Mee Kaur. His brother Ramesh is also active in politics. Sajjan Kumar has a son and two daughters. Sajjan Kumar first became active in politics in 1977, when he contested the Delhi Municipal elections from Madipur and became the Delhi MP. In the same year, he was appointed as the General Secretary of the Delhi State Congress Committee (PCC). He first served in the Lok Sabha in 1980, when 35-year-old Sajjan Kumar defeated Brahm Prakash; elected in the seventh Lok Sabha elections The first chief minister of Delhi. Thereafter, Sajan Kumar was elected as a member of the Lok Sabha in the 10th and 14th Lok Sabha elections. In December 2018, he had to resign as a major member of the Indian National Congress; in 1984, he was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Delhi High Court in the anti-Sikh riot case.

Sajan Kumar is considered one of the most controversial politicians in the Indian National Congress. He is best known as one of the architects of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. After the assassination of Indira Gandhi (then Prime Minister of India) on October 31, 1984, several witnesses, including Jagdish Kaur, Cham Kaur and Fota Singh, came forward to accuse Sa Jan Kumar, the man who incited the mob to kill, belongs to the Sikh community. He was charged in 2005; after his name appeared in the recommendations of the Nanavati Commission. After a long period of time, Sajjan Kumar was finally sentenced to life imprisonment by the Delhi High Court on December 17, 2018.
