Saket Gokhale

Saket Gokhale is an Indian RTI activist, social activist and former journalist. He is a supporter of the Indian political party Indian National Congress.

Saket Gokhale was born in Nashik, Mumbai in 1988 (33 years old in 2021). He studied Journalism and Media Studies at Wilson College, Mumbai from 2004 to 2007. In 2008, he studied at Trinity College, London. He also studied Language Teaching at Prague School in the Czech Republic.

In an interview with reporters, he said,

“I’m not married, I’m single, and I don’t have any family (who needs my care). I don’t have any children either.”

Profession

In April 2008, he started working as an English lecturer at Hampson CS sro in Mladá Boleslav, Czech Republic. In June 2008, he worked as an independent foreign correspondent covering Europe and South Asia. In October 2009, he started working as a South Asia correspondent at Debtwire (Financial Times Group). In April 2014, he joined Flarepath Digital in Mumbai as Head of Brand Content Strategy and worked there for over a year. From July 2015 to February 2017, he worked as Creative Director and Head of Content (Digital Quotient) at HT Media Ltd in New Delhi.

After resigning from his post in 2017, he started working as an RTI activist and has filed more than 50 RTIs as of 2021. Some of his most watched petitions include:

  • In April 2019, he filed a case in the Supreme Court of India to investigate the undeclared assets of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. His case was dismissed due to many flaws. He then wrote a letter to the Chief Justice of India, saying that there were attempts to protect Prime Minister Narendra Modi from the case filed by him. Some of the contents of the letter are as follows:

Your Lordship, I do not wish to elaborate on my case in detail nor to prejudice it. I simply wish to draw your attention to the fact that my claim is related to a disagreement over the details of the land assets owned by the Honourable Prime Minister in Gujarat which were not disclosed in his election affidavit.”

  • In 2020, he moved the Allahabad High Court seeking a ban on Bhoomi Poojan or the foundation stone laying ceremony of the Ram temple in Ayodhya during the coronavirus pandemic. He objected to a gathering of 300 people at a single location, which violated the social distancing guidelines of the state and central governments. Later, the Allahabad High Court rejected his plea. Subsequently, he appeared on news channels opposing the foundation stone laying ceremony of the Ram temple in Ayodhya. Based on his tweets, he started receiving death threat calls from the BJP and RSS.
  • In 2020, Saket Gokhale filed a petition in the Bombay High Court seeking a direction to the Ministry of Women and Child Development to remove Rekha Sharma from the post of chairperson. Saket alleged that she was promoting the anti-Muslim theory of ‘love jihad’.
  • In 2021, he wrote a written complaint to the Maharashtra Home Minister, questioning how Fadnavis obtained stocks of remdesivir from Gujarat, which were only used by the government. He demanded that a case be filed against BJP leader and former Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis in case he was found guilty. Saket wrote in the letter:

This issue not only poses a serious threat to the stability of the Maharashtra government, but is also an insult to the millions of residents of Maharashtra who have been desperately searching and scrambling for Remdesivir during the pandemic, which is being illegally hoarded by the opposition parties.”

He further added,

Claims [made] Fadnavis’s claims about plans to donate remdesivir to the state government appear to be an afterthought and a hastily concocted explanation after the Mumbai police uncovered illegal procurement of remdesivir.”

  • In 2011, he volunteered as a management and restructuring advisor to the Ladakh Aid/REWA Association in Leh, Ladakh.
  • In 2015, his father, Suhas Gokhale, was arrested for alleged links with drug dealers. On the same day, Suhas retired from the police force. After serving for nearly five years, in 2019, his name was removed from the charge sheet as he was not found guilty.   • In December 2020, he developed chest pain and difficulty breathing and was later diagnosed with mild cardiac arrest.
