Sam Asghari Demurs on Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake Drama: ‘I Was Very Young When They Dated’ (Exclusive)

Asghari himself is minding his own business.

The actor and model, 29, was married to Britney Spears from June 2022 until their split in August 2023.

And now, amid a feud between his ex-wife, 42, and her ex-lover Justin Timberlake, Asghari says he just wants to be “supportive” of Spears.

“I try not to follow the news for fun. Especially the news that passed my time. It’s something that I never really get involved in just because I think personal life and professional life are two different things,” she tells PEOPLE exclusively of the recent headlines surrounding the former couple, who dated from 1999-2002.

When Spears and Timberlake – who is married to Jessica Biel – first started dating, Asghari was 5 years old. “I was very young when they were dating, so I don’t really follow that kind of pop culture,” he says, adding, “and entertainment news could be completely different from reality.”

The drama between Spears and Timberlake reached new heights as Timberlake celebrated his 43rd birthday on January 31 with a one-night stand at Irving Plaza in New York City.

“I’d like to take this opportunity to apologize to absolutely nobody,” the former *NSYNC star told the crowd before singing her 2002 hit “Cry Me a River.”

Timberlake’s comments came after Spears shared her thoughts on the iconic music video in her October memoir The woman in mewriting: “A woman who looks like me cheats on him, and he wanders sadly in the rain.”

Timberlake’s apology (or lack of apology) then became the last discussion between the two after what appeared to be a brief truce. After Timberlake Saturday night live performance on Jan. 27, Spears took to Instagram to praise her ex and his new music.

“I want to apologize for some things I wrote about in my book. If I offended any of the people I genuinely care about, I’m very sorry…” she said in a post that has since been deleted. “I also wanted to say that I’m in love with Justin Timberlake’s new song ‘Selfish’. It’s so good.”

At the time, an insider told PEOPLE that Spears “honestly just wanted to wish [Justin] good. She is a kind person.”

But after Timberlake’s statement on stage, Spears posted another message on Instagram. “Someone told me that someone is talking… about me on the street!!! Are you going to take it to court or are you going to go home crying to your mom like last time??? I’m not sorry!!!”
